Click here to visit the new home of Politics Daily!(Nov. 2) -- Little more than an hour after the polls closed in Kentucky, Republican Rand Paul became the first candidate to arise out of the anti-big government tea party movement to be elected to the Senate. Based on exit polls and early returns that showed him with a 55 percent to 45 percent lead over Democrat Jack Conway, Paul was anointed senator-elect. Paul's victory does not affect the balance in the Senate since he won a GOP-held seat. ...
(Oct. 27) -- MoveOn.org activist Lauren Valle and Rand Paul supporter Tim Profitt were launched into the national spotlight following what may end up being the most infamous incident of the 2010 campaign season. Valle was attempting to present Kentucky Senate candidate and tea party favorite Paul with a fake "Employee of the Month" award as part of MoveOn.org's RepubliCorp initiative when she was wrestled down and briefly stomped on by Profitt. (For a full account of the incident, read more at Politics Daily.) Here is the video of the incident: In case you missed the action on the Rand ...
(Oct. 6) -- If imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, then Barack Obama, like so many presidents before him, has reason to smile. Tea party favorite Rand Paul (son of Ron) has produced a new ad against Jack Conway, his Democratic rival for the Senate in Kentucky. In it, Paul employs an Obama impersonator for an uncanny voice-over to make his point that Conway and the president are in ideological lockstep with each other. Watch: The as-yet-unidentified impersonator has, according to reports, fooled more than a few viewers in Kentucky into believing that the voice in the ad is that ...
(Aug. 10) -- College: a time for regrettable shenanigans often better left forgotten. Politicians, however, don't have that luxury. Ever since Bill Clinton was forced to awkwardly proclaim he "didn't inhale," office seekers have had to defend just about every action they have ever taken in their life, dating back to their youthful indiscretions. This brings us to Rand Paul, the 47-year-old son of Rep. Ron Paul, R-Texas, and Republican nominee for the Senate in Kentucky (he was ahead by 6.5 points in the latest polls), who's now in a little hot water over his membership in a secret society ...
Kentucky Republican Senate candidate Rand Paul's campaign chairman has quit in order to manage the race of a Tea Party-favored candidate for governor. David Adams said Tuesday he would become campaign manager for a conservative gubernatorial ticket that is being formed, The Associated Press reported. Adams did not name the candidate for governor, or say in what state the new campaign would be mounted. "He decided he preferred in-state politics to federal politics," Paul campaign manager Jesse Benton said in an e-mail to CNN. "He's a great guy and will be missed." Adams told the AP his ...
(June 10) -- After her impressive showing in Tuesday's South Carolina primary, Republicans are hailing Nikki Haley as a rising star in the party. It's a term that's been applied to other candidates who've made a splash in recent elections. Few have lived up to the hype. Technically, Haley hasn't won yet. She fell just short of 50 percent in a race against three more-experienced politicians -- all men -- for the GOP gubernatorial nomination. She faces a June 22 runoff against Rep. Gresham Barrett. The Republican Governors Association issued a statement congratulating Haley and calling the ...
WASHINGTON (May 21) -- Kentucky's Republican Senate candidate Rand Paul criticized President Barack Obama's handling of the Gulf oil spill Friday as putting "his boot heel on the throat of BP" and "really un-American." Paul's defense of the oil company came during an interview in which he tried to explain his controversial take on civil rights law, an issue that has overtaken his campaign since his victory in Tuesday's GOP primary. "What I don't like from the president's administration is this sort of, 'I'll put my boot heel on the throat of BP,'" Rand said in an interview with ABC's "Good ...
Dr. Rand Paul, son of 2008 Republican Presidential candidate and fundraising juggernaut Ron Paul, announced his candidacy for US Senator from Kentucky in 2010. He teased the announcement on his Twitter feed, but let the cat out of the bag on the Rachel Maddow Show:As a candidate, Paul's stands on the issues position him as a sort of "Ron Paul Lite." ...
