Click here to visit the new home of Politics Daily!Andreas Serrano, the controversial photographer whose "Piss Christ" created a stir in the 1980's, guest judged this week on Bravo's reality show, "Work of Art." "Piss Crist" is a photograph of a plastic crucifix submerged in the artist's urine. When it exhibited, conservative senators were outraged not only at the piece but that Serrano had received funding from the National Endowment for the Arts. On the show, the contestants were shown examples of Serrano's work -- some feature menstrual blood, semen and feces -- and instructed to come up with controversial work on their own. If it seems ...

(Dec. 31) – If you've sipped at all from the certifiable torrent of retrospectives that have appeared in the past few weeks, you've been reminded why the 2000s were a period we'd all surely like to forget. This was a decade the started with a recession, terrorist attacks and two wars, then ended with a more severe recession, a thwarted terrorist attack – and the same two wars. In between, we endured disasters that killed thousands and cost billions, watched the Internet wreak its transformative havoc and witnessed the coarsening of both our popular culture and our politics. ...
I intend to toast the end of this decade with gratitude and a kiss, but a gleam is in my eye for 2010 and beyond. Will we learn from our heroines, heroes, villains and failures? At the start of a new decade, and at the end of a tragic, chaotic and glorious one, life has repositioned us for change. Will we make the most of it?My "wishes" for the years to come are framed as questions laced with hope:1. Will we demand a solid education for every American child? I've talked to kids who attend private and public, suburban and urban schools and have been grieved by gaps in their training. The good ...
FORT COLLINS, Colo. (Dec. 23) - The parents who pulled the balloon boy hoax in hopes of landing a reality TV show were sentenced to jail Wednesday - 90 days for him, 20 days for her - and barred from profiting from their newfound celebrity status for the next four years. Choking back tears, Richard Heene apologized in court for the frenzy he caused when he claimed his 6-year-old son Falcon had floated away in a giant helium balloon shaped like a flying saucer. "I'm very, very sorry. And I want to apologize to all the rescue workers out there, and the people that got involved in the ...
SHANGHAI, China (CNN) -- It all started with the lure of the glitz, the glamour and the dream of being China's next pop star. But, as with many reality shows, Lou Jing's instant fame came with unanticipated consequences. Lou Jing was born 20 years ago in Shanghai to a Chinese mother and an African-American father. According to her mother, who asked not to be identified in this report, she met Lou's father while she was still in college. He left China before their daughter was born. Growing up with a single mom in central Shanghai, Lou Jing said she had good friends and lived a normal life. ...
(Dec. 2) - Some people are so upset about Michaele and Tareq Salahi crashing the White House State Dinner that they want the publicity-hungry socialites prosecuted. While there's new evidence that they weren't invited, it's not clear whether they did anything illegal. The Salahis were not on the guest list for last week's party, according to the White House and Secret Service. And although they've said they believed they were invited, newly released e-mails undercut the couple's claim. News that they were escorted out of the Congressional Black Caucus Foundation's awards dinner a month ago ...
Just how did the turkey -- a bird native to North America -- become synonymous with thoughtless, annoying people, so often overstuffed with jive? Let's face it, some of our nominees for 2009 Turkey of the Year wouldn't be welcome at any Thanksgiving dinner. So, with no further ado, let's look at some of the year's most fowl personalities. AP Roguishly Raw: That ring you hear when your 15 minutes of fame are up must be a call from someone asking you to pose nude. Levi Johnston's offer came from Playgirl, and he promised the pictorial would be "tasteful." We now know that Johnston's ...

The flurry of posts by my female colleagues on movies and TV shows has gone Right. Over. My. Head. I have never heard of this Julie-whatever movie they are debating. What's the big whoop? And although I've seen a couple episodes of "Mad Men," I think the show is boring and unwatchable. I'm way out of my league trying to debate these TV shows that -- let's be frank -- don't have a chance in heck of being on the cover of Us Weekly. So really, why watch? Go ahead and call me superficial, low-brow, cheesy, trashy, shallow and unsophisticated; I accept all those descriptions. So I'm ...
