Steele, Republicans Inject Marshall and Slavery into Kagan Debate

Elena Kagan came in for some provocative criticism from the Republican National Committee and its chairman, Michael Steele, just minutes after her nomination to the Supreme Court was officially announced. They demanded to know if she agreed with her onetime boss, the late Justice Thurgood Marshall, that the Constitution as originally drafted was "defective." That would be the Constitution that preserved slavery, and that's what Marshall was talking about. The RNC Research Department set the stage with a memo that asked: Does Kagan Still View Constitution "As Originally Drafted And ...

Republican Finance Chief Fired Over $2,000 Tab at Strip Club

Republican Finance Chief Fired Over $2,000 Tab at Strip Club

The Republican National Committee finance chief, the guy in charge of the purse strings when staffers charged nearly $2,000 for "meals" at a Los Angeles bondage-themed club, has been fired. Rob Bickhart will be replaced by Mary Heitman, former finance director for the Republican Governors Association, Politico reported Friday. Bickhart's dismissal comes as the RNC tries to lure back donors who were put off by reports earlier this year of the after-hours outing to Voyeur West Hollywood by the Young Eagles, the invitation-only group of young donors to the Republican Party. In March, the RNC ...

Push Polling: Garbage in, Garbage Out

Push Polling: Garbage in, Garbage Out

There is little in the cynical world of politics that is more cynical than push polling, the dark art and warped science of using a phony survey (over the phone or through the mail) that disseminates false or negative information about a candidate or cause. The most famous push poll, it is said, came during the Republican presidential primary season of 2000 when supporters of future-president George W. Bush's campaign initiated a telephone push-poll campaign against rival John McCain, which included the false allegation that he had fathered an illegitimate black child. McCain reportedly (and ...

Fox News Should Step Up and Hire Michael Steele -- Everybody Will Win

Fox News Should Step Up and Hire Michael Steele -- Everybody Will Win

Somebody needs to make Michael Steele an offer he can't refuse. I nominate Roger Ailes and Fox News Channel. Fox is already the Republican home away from home, a refuge for has-beens, wannabes, and all who strive to stay relevant. They never get demerits for those "he/she said WHAT?" moments -- in fact controversy is an FNC family value. The pay is good, and there's no requirement to make it public. Simply sit back, spout off, and enjoy the fallout. Do I even need to say how perfect all of this would be for Steele? Not to mention his long-suffering party? He'd be a great commentator and an ...

RNC Chairman Steele's Newest Aide Misused Baseball Groups' Money

RNC Chairman Steele's Newest Aide Misused Baseball Groups' Money

Republican National Committee chairman Michael Steele -- who really can't afford another 'holy ----" story after a GOP staffer dropped $1,900 at a lesbian-bondage themed Hollywood club and a top conservative called for an RNC donor boycott -- has hired a new "special assistant for finance." Although described by many as a smart, gifted and glib fundraiser, Neil S. Alpert, 31, who began work on March 29, probably won't do much to burnish Steele's image as a money manager. This is the same Neil S. Alpert who in July 2007 was ordered by the District of Columbia government to repay nearly ...

RNC Fires Staffer Who Expensed $2,000 Tab at Sex-Themed Nightclub

RNC Fires Staffer Who Expensed $2,000 Tab at Sex-Themed Nightclub

A Republican National Committee staffer who approved an expense reimbursement of nearly $2,000 for "meals" at a Los Angeles bondage-themed club has been fired. In announcing the termination Tuesday, the RNC distanced itself from the after-hours outing to Voyeur West Hollywood by the Young Eagles, the invitation-only club for young donors to the Republican Party. "This was not an RNC-sanctioned event and was not associated in any way with any RNC official event," the committee's chief of staff, Ken McKay, wrote in a statement to Politico. The staffer "was aware that this activity was not ...

GOP Chairman Michael Steele Spends Lavishly on the Road

GOP Chairman Michael Steele Spends Lavishly on the Road

During official Republican National Committee trips, chairman Michael Steele spent tens of thousands of dollars on private air travel, limousines and hotels according to an investigation by The Daily Caller. The conservative Web site founded by pundit Tucker Carlson looked at FEC filings and also alleged that during a February RNC visit to Beverly Hills, Steele spent $1,946.25 at "Voyeur West Hollywood, a bondage-themed nightclub featuring topless women dancers imitating lesbian sex." The Republican National Committee disputed that Steele himself had spent money at the Hollywood nightclub. ...
