Rhode Island elections

Rhode Island

Republicans have little chance of holding on to the governor's office in Rhode Island as Don Carcieri steps down because of term limits. The question is whether it will go to Democrat Frank Caprio or independent Lincoln Chafee, a former Republican senator who backed Barack Obama for president two years ago. Polls show Chafee and Caprio locked in a tight race. There is no Senate election in the Ocean State this year, but one of its two House seats is open because of Rep. Patrick Kennedy's retirement after eight terms in Congress. The seat is projected to remain Democratic. Obama won Rhode Island in 2008.
