Click here to visit the new home of Politics Daily!(July 17) -- Recent weeks have produced a series of grim and related headlines: Russia has declared a state of emergency because of drought in 12 regions, while in major wheat exporter Ukraine, severe flooding may depress crop yields. Dry conditions threaten Vietnamese rice production. The USDA has projected a disappointingly low Midwest harvest, and China has raised questions on the demand side by doubling its imports from Canada. (July 6) -- As the Chinese economy beefs up, so are its citizens ... to the point where "Fat" is no longer just a popular name, but also the description for 100 million Chinese citizens. That number is small compared to China's 1.5 billion population, but experts fear the number of obese citizens could double in 10 years. What is the reason for all the super-sizing? According to Los Angeles-based bariatric surgeon Dr. Carson Liu, it's a case of East meets West. ...
The Associated Press reports that top officials in the Bush Administration met regularly in the White House to discuss and authorize various harsh interrogation methods in the years after the September 11th attacks. A former senior intelligence official told the AP that the meetings among so-called "principles" in the Administration took place in the White House Situation room and involved Vice-President Cheney, former Attorney General John Ashcroft, former Secretary of State Colin Powell, former CIA director George Tenet, and then National Security Adviser Condoleezza Rice. President Bush was ...
Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice and Secretary of Defense Robert Gates are in Russia for meetings with outgoing Russian President Vladimir Putin and his successor, Dmitry Medvedev. High on the list of items to be discussed is the dispute between the two nations over U.S. plans for a ballistic missile defense system in Eastern Europe and the Czech Republic. Russia opposes locating missiles and radar installations in the two former Soviet bloc countries on grounds that the system may one day be converted to an offensive system targeting Russia. American officials, including President Bush ...
The Bush Administration announced new targeted sanctions on elements of Iran's banking and military sectors, as well as some key individuals that the White House believes enable Iran's illicit nuclear programs. Secretary of State Condoleeza Rice and Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson announced the sanctions this morning. Rice explained,"What this means is that no U.S. citizen or private organization will be allowed to engage in financial transactions with these persons and entities. In addition, any assets that these designees have under U.S. jurisdiction will be immediately frozen."This Iranian ...
Secretary of State Condoleeza Rice visited Cairo, Egypt, this week seeking that government's support for the White House's proposed Middle East peace conference in Annapolis, Maryland. Egypt's support is seen as key to gaining further participation from Arab countries. Egypt had been skeptical about the aims of such a conference until Rice's visit. After meeting with the Secretary of State, Egypt's Foreign Minister, Aboul Gheit, said that his country would support the United States led effort."We feel encouraged regarding what we heard from Secretary Rice and promised her that we would help ...
It became official today: FSU freshman LB Marcus Ball will miss the rest of this season after tearing his left ACL against Rice on Saturday. The injury happened in the 3rd quarter while covering a kickoff. The tear was not caused by any contact. His knee simply gave out when attempting to make a cut to make a tackle. Ball has been nothing short of excellent in his playing time this season. He has been one of the most surprising players on the team as a true freshman. We all thought that #1 recruit Myron Rolle was going to make the biggest impact of the freshmen this year. That still may prove ...
Florida State did exactly what they were supposed to do on Saturday - destroy a bad team. They established a running game, got Xavier Lee a bunch of playing time, and were able to play a lot of their new, young players. I would have to say they accomplished everything they set out to do. In the end, it equaled a 55-7 pounding of Rice. However, it still doesn't prove a thing as far as winning games against real teams. The offense got the job done. . . finally. They compiled 500 yards. Lorenzo and Antone each went over 100 yards on the day. Surratt scored 2 more TDs, bring his season total to 5 ...
It was nice to see that offense is still possible for Florida State. Joe Surratt's TD run on the opening drive was the first time we have scored a touchdown in the first half all year. Even crazier is that this is the first time in the last 10 games that we have had a lead at halftime. No, that is not a typo. Things have been that bad lately. The J-Train's 1 yard plunge was his 4th score in 4 games this year. What a weapon. The running game has piled up 150 yards. Booker looked good with 90 yards on 10 carries. He still had a couple runs that could have been nice gains had he not shown off ...
When Xavier Lee committed to FSU, most Seminole fans believed he would be the One to lead the Noles back to greatness. 3 years later, Lee has yet to start a game in garnet and gold. Fellow QB recruit from the 2004 class Drew Weatherford beat out Lee before last season and has been the starter ever since. Weatherford did a great job last season, considering the situation he was in. The worst offensive line play ever witnessed, combined with the worst play caller in all of football made his record setting freshman season all the more respectable. This season, Weatherford has struggled to lead the ...
