Sarah Palin: Running Against History -- and the VP Curse?

Sarah Palin: Running Against History -- and the VP Curse?

Sarah Palin's fan dance -- will she or won't she run for president in 2012? -- teases money from supporters and seduces the celebrity-centric media. Yet, before too long, the former governor and her devoted followers will face a sobering reality. Should she seek the Republican nomination, she not only will confront several White House-minded candidates in her own party but also the unalterable facts of American political history. To be tactful about the subject: Voters haven't been particularly kind to losing vice-presidential nominees of either party for nearly a century. Interestingly, ...

NKorea: To Bomb or Not to Bomb Was the Question

NKorea: To Bomb or Not to Bomb Was the Question

(July 7) -- If North Korea is playing political and military poker, it seems they hold all the top cards. It's been a pain in the side of every Washington administration since the war of the 1950s, and judging from recently declassified papers, it's not a problem that's going to go away anytime soon. Even a nuclear option that included bombing up to 12 military targets was considered by the Nixon administration and then-National Security Adviser Henry Kissinger, the papers revealed, after a U.S. spy plane was shot down by Pyongyang in 1969, killing all 31 crewmen aboard. It was rejected for ...

White House Spokesman Who Resigned Over Nixon Pardon Is Dead at 87

Jerald terHorst, the White House press secretary who held the job only 30 days and quit when Gerald Ford pardoned Richard Nixon, has died. He was 87. His son Peter said terHorst died of congestive heart failure at a North Carolina retirement community, CNN reported. A former newspaper reporter, terHorst took the job of administration spokesman Aug. 9, 1974, after Nixon resigned during the Watergate scandal and Ford became president. TerHorst submitted a resignation letter Sept. 8, the same day Ford granted Nixon an unconditional pardon. He wrote about his anger that Ford would pardon Nixon ...

Ben Bradlee: A Legend After 'All the President's Men'

"Nothing's riding on this except the, uh, First Amendment to the Constitution, freedom of the press, and maybe the future of the country." That sentence was uttered by actor Jason Robards playing Washington Post Editor Ben Bradlee in what is arguably the best performance of his career in "All the President's Men," one of the 100 greatest films of all time, according to the American Film Institute. Oh, the glory days of newspapers! What with Quinn Bradlee, son of Bradlee and columnist Sally Quinn, in the news (as reported by my Politics Daily colleague Annie Groer here and here) and last ...

The Ultimate American Heresy: 'I Am a Super Bowl Refusnik.'

The Ultimate American Heresy: 'I Am a Super Bowl Refusnik.'

Like so much in my life, I blame it on Richard Nixon. If Nixon had not purported to be such a fanatic football fan that he designed a special play for Washington Redskins coach George Allen... If, at the height of the Vietnam War, official Washington had not embraced the Redskins and pro football with a bipartisan bellicose frenzy unmatched since the Roman Senate worshipped at the Temple of Mars... If the Redskins under Allen, reflecting the theocratic excess of the sport, did not get down on their knees in the locker room to offer a prayer of gratitude after defeating the Dallas Cowboys... ...

Tony Blair: Jesus Christ or Richard Nixon?

Tony Blair: Jesus Christ or Richard Nixon?

LONDON -- Former British Prime Minister Tony Blair appeared before a government-appointed panel in London Friday to answer questions about his role in the war in Iraq. It was, in many ways, the moment this country has been waiting for ever since Blair's government joined the United States in invading Iraq in 2003. And in a telling sign of just how torn up the U.K. is over this man -- and this conflict -- he was alternately compared to both Jesus Christ and Richard Nixon as he took the stand. ...

Richard Nixon's Grandson, Chris Cox, Running for Congress

Richard Nixon's Grandson, Chris Cox, Running for Congress

Chris Cox, an attorney and the grandson of former president Richard Nixon, is running for Congress in New York, according to his campaign web site. Cox, 30, a New York native, is among a field of candidates seeking the GOP nomination to face incumbent Democrat Tim Bishop in the state's 1st Congressional District on Eastern Long Island, Huffington Post reported. A web site bio describes Cox as "a fiscal conservative who will fight for limited government and lower taxes." During the 2008 presidential election, Cox served as executive director of John McCain's New York campaign. He is a former ...

Nixon Aides Pushed Race-Driven Strategy to Divide Democrats in 1972

Documents released by the National Archives reveal that aides to President Richard Nixon hoped to stir controversy among Democrats before the 1972 election by fueling a push for black candidates, CNN reports. A report titled "Dividing the Democrats" outlines a plan for "spreading out into the ghettos of the country" to convince black Americans to run as Democrats and turn white voters against the Democratic Party. ...

How Obama's Health Reform Push Compares to his Predecessors'

How Obama's Health Reform Push Compares to his Predecessors'

As President Obama leans into the Sisyphean boulder of health care reform, he inches forward in the footsteps of several predecessors. No fewer than four U.S. presidents in the past century have tried and failed to enact universal health care legislation. To be sure, Obama has had help along the way. And as the current congressional debate underscores, not all universal health care plans are created equal. But it seems likely that 44 will be the first president to achieve a congressional vote on universal health care legislation. A look at how and when his Oval Office brethren fell short: ...

Lamar Alexander Misplays the Nixon Card on a Defensive Obama White House

Lamar Alexander Misplays the Nixon Card on a Defensive Obama White House

When Lamar Alexander ran for the 1996 GOP presidential nomination, his campaign was built around his trademark red-and-black plaid shirts, virtuoso performances of "Alexander's Ragtime Band" on any handy piano, and an entirely forgettable (but impeccably delivered) stump speech. In fact, the only time I ever heard the former Tennessee governor depart from his robotic script was when the topic turned to Richard Nixon. On a late-night plane flight across Florida, Alexander began animatedly reminiscing about his heady, youthful days as a staff aide in the 1969 Nixon White House, serving as ...
