The Arizona Backlash: Immigration Debate Stirs Historic Passions

Immigration is the canary in the coal mine of American politics. Like unseen deadly gases in a mine, fear of foreigners has a capacity to strike without warning or detection. Then came the overwrought restrictive Arizona law giving police broad power to detain illegal immigrants. "I holler and the coyote stopped. I holler again. By this time I had taken my weapon out and charged it," Perry told the AP, referring to his .380 Ruger handgun. "It is now staring dead at me.
