It's not happening. That's the message from Sen.-elect Joe Manchin's team in the face of rumors that West Virginia's Democratic governor is being wooed by Republicans to switch parties before he's sworn into the Senate next week. "Joe Manchin is a life-long Democrat and he is not switching parties," said Melvin Smith, Manchin's communications director in West Virginia. "He wants to work with all sides -- Democrats and Republicans -- to move our state and nation forward. He is looking forward to going to Washington to do his part to help rebuild America." Smith also told Politics Daily he is ...
Ukrainian-born, WBO, IBF and IBO heavyweight champion Wladimir Klitschko scored his 13th straight victory and his 10th stoppage during that run with Saturday's 10th-round technical knockout victory over Nigerian-born former titlist Samuel Peter, in a rematch of their September 2005 bout won by Klitschko after having been floored three times. Klitschko nailed the loser with several hooks, right hands and uppercuts -- the last punch being a left hook that floored Peter just as referee Robert Byrd was stepping in to protect the teetering ex-champion at 1:22 of the 10th. The fight, during which ...
Most experts agree West Virginia's Democratic Gov. Joe Manchin will likely fill the Senate seat held by the late Robert Byrd, who died in June. While Manchin is still the favorite, Morgantown industrialist (and former West Virginia GOP Chair) John Raese is already up with TV ads and a new Facebook page. You can watch Raese's ad here: Clearly, Raese's ad is well produced and effective. He's essentially running against Barack Obama -- a smart move, considering the president's lackluster approval ratings in the state. The bad news for Raese is that, even if he wins the August 28 primary ...
WASHINGTON (July 21) -- State unemployment agencies are gearing up to resume sending unemployment payments to millions of people as Congress moves to ship President Barack Obama a measure to restore lapsed benefits. After months of increasingly bitter stalemate, the Senate passed the measure Wednesday by a 59-39 vote. Obama is poised to sign the measure into law after a final House vote on Thursday. It's a welcome relief to 2½ million people who been out of work for six months or more have seen their benefits lapse. Under best-case scenarios, unemployed people who have been denied jobless ...
Some budget watchers nicknamed Sen. Robert C. Byrd (D-W.Va.) the "King of Pork." Other people say he improved the quality of life for thousands of West Virginians by landing federal earmarks for his home state. The late senator was unapologetic about the billions of federal dollars that he brought to West Virginia -- one of the poorest states in the nation. In fact, he was proud of his porky ways, famously saying in 2000, "West Virginia has always had four friends: God Almighty, Sears Roebuck, Carter's Liver Pills and Robert C. Byrd." Byrd died June 28. Carte Goodwin was sworn in Tuesday as ...
Carte Goodwin was sworn into the Senate Tuesday, succeeding the late Sen. Robert Byrd. Vice President Joe Biden administered the oath of office with West Virginia's senior senator, Jay Rockefeller, looking on. Goodwin then provided the key vote to end a Republican filibuster against a bill to extend unemployment benefits for long-term unemployed Americans, after which the Senate gallery erupted into applause. Goodwin, 36, is the youngest senator and the 57th Democrat in the Senate. He'll also have one of the shortest terms, since West Virginia will hold a special election to fill the ...
West Virginia Gov. Joe Manchin said it was "one of the toughest decisions I've ever made," but few were surprised when he announced Tuesday that he will run for the U.S. Senate, hoping to fill out the remaining two years in the seat held for more than half a century by the late Sen. Robert Byrd. "I want to make it official," Manchin said in Charleston, "I am running for the United States Senate. I intend, with the opportunity, to work as hard in Washington as I have in West Virginia. I've worked tirelessly." ...
West Virginia Gov. Joe Manchin has named well-connected Charleston lawyer Carte Goodwin to fill the late Sen. Robert Byrd's Senate seat until a November election can be held for the unexpired term. When that happens, Manchin himself may jump into the fray. Goodwin, 36, served as chief counsel to the Democratic governor. His father, who died in April, had been chairman of the West Virginia University Board of Governors, his uncle is a federal judge, and he is married to Sen. Jay Rockefeller's state director. The Associated Press, reporting the appointment, said Manchin would make it official ...
(July 16) -- West Virginia Gov. Joe Manchin has selected his former chief counsel, Democrat Carte Goodwin, to fill the late Sen. Robert Byrd's vacated Senate seat, according to The Associated Press. Manchin's official announcement is expected at a 2 p.m. news conference. Bob Bird, AP West Virginia Gov. Joe Manchin has tapped Carte Goodwin to fill the late U.S. Sen. Robert C. Byrd's seat. Goodwin's appointment is of immediate legislative significance, as it likely represents the 60th supporting vote required for the Senate to pass a bill that will resume federal contributions to unemployment ...
