While the Oscars evening certainly had its memorable moments -- Kirk Douglas charming Anne Hathaway and Randy Newman's acceptance speech made for "good television" -- the press has offered a few choice words on the show itself, particularly for co-host and "127 Hours" star James Franco. Surge Desk has a sampling: MovieFone's Alonso Duralde was not impressed with the infallible James Franco: "One of the zillion tweets posted during this year's Academy Awards said it best: 'Tonight's show finally answers the whole 'What can't James Franco do?' thing.' The ...
The weather outside will soon be frightful, apparently. As people across the Plains and Midwest get ready for a major winter storm, Surge Desk turned to Twitter to gauge panic levels and preparedness. Roger Ebert's right. This will be a big one in Chicago, where snowfall totals could top 18 inches. .bbpBox32231612842250240 {background:url(http://a1.twimg.com/profile_background_images/46080801/thirdman.jpg) #000000;padding:20px;} p.bbpTweet{background:#fff;padding:10px 12px 10px 12px;margin:0;min-height:48px;color:#000;font-size:18px ...
(Sept. 27) -- From witches to monkeys. No, it's not time for another "Wizard of Oz" retrospective, but you could be forgiven for thinking as much given the amount of attention surrounding current Delaware GOP senatorial candidate Christine O'Donnell's prior life as a TV pundit or, more specifically, a few of her key controversial comments about said topics. Over the weekend, Bill Maher aired a 12-year-old clip of O'Donnell on his previous show "Politically Incorrect," in which she argued that "evolution is a myth" and asks "Why aren't monkeys still evolving into humans?" To answer her ...
Kids. Are they bundles of joy? Or crippling burdens? A trip to the mall will remind anyone that it depends on the parent and depends on the kid. However, a headline like that is not going sell papers. Despite the title of New York Magazine cover story "I Love My Children. I Hate My Life," readers learn on page six of the six-page article that research reveals in the long run parents do not regret having kids. It's the childless who have regrets. Sure, kids will ruin your life. But so does everything, if you live long enough. My colleague Sarah Wildman acknowledges the frustrations of ...
For my mother's 79th birthday later this month, her four children are going to give her an e-reader. We have yet to decide which one to give her, but she's very keen to join this trend. As a frequent traveler, and avid reader, she finds that she's always lugging 12 hard-cover books wherever she goes (often London to visit me!). So she'd like to lighten her load. Apparently, several of her friends already have e-readers and they are all thrilled with them. I have mixed feelings about this present. On the one hand, as someone who -- by her own admission -- barely has running water and ...
(Jan. 26) -- Washington, D.C.'s schools chancellor is facing harsh criticism for her claim that among the 266 city teachers she fired last October, some "had sex with children." Speaking with the magazine Fast Company, Michelle Rhee was explaining the criteria she used to determine which teachers the city let go in the face of a $43.9 million budget shortfall. "I got rid of teachers who had hit children, who had sex with children, who had missed 78 days of school," Rhee said. "Why wouldn't we take those things into consideration?" The problem for Rhee is that if school authorities knew of ...
Until he resigned this week, Jay Mariotti had been the second most famous columnist at the Chicago Sun-Times. The paper's most famous columnist, Roger Ebert, is the latest to tell Mariotti, "Good riddance."An open letter from Ebert to Mariotti includes the following:What an ugly way to leave the Sun-Times. It does not speak well for you. Your timing was exquisite. You signed a new contract, waited until days after the newspaper had paid for your trip to Beijing at great cost, and then resigned with a two-word e-mail: "I quit." You saved your explanation for a local television station. As ...
