The Polanski Case: Why Using the Word 'Rape' Matters

The Polanski Case: Why Using the Word 'Rape' Matters

Roman Polanski may be racking up some high-profile support in America, as my Politics Daily colleagues Mary, Bonnie and Domenica have noted, but abroad he's losing his friends in government fast. Both the French and Polish governments have announced they are dropping their support of Polanski, just days after foreign ministers from both countries appealed to U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton for clemency, right before she was set to chair a United Nations' meeting on sexual violence against women. Even more important than the announcement that they wouldn't officially support Polanski, ...

Exactly What Roman Polanski Did

You said it, Mary. I understand the political and community cohesiveness that prompts residents of Hollywood (or Hackensack, for that matter), to publicly support a person whose work they admire and whose company they enjoy. We all occasionally refuse to focus on unflattering or boorish behavior in the haze of our affection or awe for someone we care for. Whenever conservatives decry "Hollywood values," the howls emanate from Malibu, with some justification. Why demonize an entire city's residents as immoral and soulless when folks there have families and lives far removed -- for the most part -- from reality-show fodder? Then a fugitive from justice is picked up in Switzerland to finally face the crime of having sex with a minor, a crime he pleaded guilty to more than 30 years before, and ...

Now Playing: Roman Polanski -- The Sequel

At 76 years old, Roman Polanski is the personification of tragic literary narrative. No Polanski biography is complete without the story arc of Holocaust survivor/Hollywood playboy/heartbroken victim of evil/visionary director/child molester/fugitive. But the storyteller's many-chaptered life turned another page Sunday when Switzerland exercised a 31-year-old-arrest warrant from the Los Angeles county district attorney's office in the far away State of California. The director of "Chinatown" pled guilty in 1977 to having sex with a minor, but a recent documentary argues that he became a ...
