The Dugout: Los Angeles Dodgers Spring Training 2011

Remember when the defining image of the Dodgers was of Kirk Gibson, struggling against his own body, doing the unthinkable and hitting a home run in the World Series against one of baseball's best pitchers? Or when it was the image of a brave African-American man breaking the color barrier and setting the standard for how baseball and the human heart should interact? Welp, now the defining image of the Dodgers is of two old rich white people getting a divorce. Congratulations, McCourts, when the Dodgers go up for auction I'm sure we can get you a spot on the Real Housewives of Local ...

Roger Ailes' Sex-and-Lies Tale: There Is Something Different About Fox

Roger Ailes' Sex-and-Lies Tale: There Is Something Different About Fox

If a television anchor were caught -- on tape! -- encouraging a colleague to lie to federal investigators in order to protect a high-profile friend, do you think he or she would still have a job? Probably not. But if you run a network and if it's Fox, well, then . . . On Thursday, The New York Times broke one of those deliciously dishy New York political-media exposés involving bold-face names. According to legal papers filed in a civil suit, in 2004 Roger Ailes, the pugilistic head of Fox News, encouraged Judith Regan, a flashy publisher, to lie to federal investigators about an affair she ...

The first edition went live in the Apple App Store at noon today. While most media observers are talking about The Daily's content, Wired's Sam Gustin is interested in the app's innovative terms of service: The Daily ...

The Daily to Launch Next Week: 5 Things We Know So Far About Rupert Murdoch's iPad Newspaper

Coming soon to a tablet near you: The Daily, the iPad-only newspaper brought to us by Apple and Rupert Murdoch's News Corp. Subscribers will pay 99 cents per week to read the publication, which, per the name, will offer a new edition every day. The Daily will launch on Feb. 2 with a party at the Guggenheim Museum in New York. Murdoch himself will appear, along with Apple's vice president of Internet services, Eddy Cue. (As we know, Steve Jobs is on medical leave.) Apple and News Corp. have been typically tight-lipped about revealing The Daily's details, so while we await its debut, here are ...

PBS the Most Trusted News Outlet, Fox the Most Distrusted, Poll Finds

PBS the Most Trusted News Outlet, Fox the Most Distrusted, Poll Finds

What a difference a year can make. According to a new Public Policy Polling survey, a majority of Americans say they don't trust Fox News, just a year after the same poll found that the conservative-leaning network was the most trusted major outlet. This year, however, Americans surveyed said they trust PBS much more than Rupert Murdoch's cable outlet. Asked to rate a number of different news organizations, 50 percent of those polled said they trusted PBS as a news source, while just 30 percent said they did not. In contrast, Fox News had a much less favorable split, with 42 percent of ...

WikiLeaks: We've Got Secret Cables on Murdoch, News Corp.

LONDON -- Not content with riling the U.S. government and military, WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange warns that he has a stash of potentially damaging secret documents on the world's most powerful media mogul: Fox News owner Rupert Murdoch. In an interview in this week's issue of Britain's left-leaning New Statesman magazine -- carried out by veteran war journalist and outspoken Assange supporter, John Pilger -- the anti-secrecy campaigner said he had "504 U.S. embassy cables on one broadcasting organization" and "cables on Murdoch and News Corp.," his multinational media company. Jim ...

MySpace for Sale: Will News Corp. Cash In?

(Nov. 30) -- Who wants to buy an ailing social networking site? Despite a relaunch earlier this year with a brand-new logo and a brand-new hookup with Facebook, News Corp. is apparently looking into the possibility of selling MySpace, the social networking site that has been overshadowed by Facebook in recent years. Word that News Corp. could soon put MySpace on the block came in a Reuters interview with company COO Chase Carey. "There are opportunities here to do 20 things [with MySpace], but that doesn't mean you're going to do any of the 20," Carey told Reuters. "If there's something ...

Megyn Kelly Talks Feminism, Poses in Lingerie and Heels

(Nov. 23) -- Perhaps Chris Wallace was busy. Posing for pictures that accompany her interview with GQ magazine, Fox News anchor Megyn Kelly dons attire that some viewers may find a tad risque. Indeed, red high heels and a tight-fitting Dolce & Gabbana slip might seem like an odd get-up to wear for pictures that accompany an albeit brief discussion of feminism. In an article titled "She Reports, We Decided She's Hot," both the pictures and text of the GQ spread attest that Kelly is perfectly comfortable showing a little skin to the camera. "People want to see the anchor," Kelly told Greg ...

Opinion: Which Is the Party of the Rich?

(Oct. 29) -- Here is a surprising fact about this election season: Democrats have spent more campaign money than Republicans -- at least if you don't count outside spending by nonprofit groups. Why have Democratic candidates done so well raising money? One reason is that many affluent Americans -- the people who can write big checks -- still like President Barack Obama and fear a return to GOP rule. It is widely known that Democrats charmed upscale voters in 2008. Obama won Americans making more than $200,000 a year by 6 percentage points and captured eight out of 10 of the wealthiest ...

Obama Takes on Fox News Again, Calls Its Political Views 'Destructive'

President Obama says Fox News is part of a journalistic tradition of news outlets promoting their political views without apology, but called Fox's political agenda "destructive" even though it has made a lot of money for owner Rupert Murdock. Fox News, the president said in an interview with Rolling Stone magazine, advocates a "point of view that I disagree with. It's a point of view that I think is ultimately destructive for the long-term growth of a country that has a vibrant middle class and is competitive in the world." Obama did not elaborate on the charge that Fox -- which features ...
