Roommate Charged With Hate Crime in Rutgers Suicide

TRENTON, N.J. -- A former Rutgers University freshman was indicted Wednesday on a hate crime charge after allegedly using a webcam to spy on a same-sex encounter involving his roommate, who committed suicide shortly afterward in a case that started a national conversation on bullying. A 15-count indictment was handed up Wednesday by a Middlesex County grand jury against Dharun Ravi, of Plainsboro, who had already faced invasion of privacy charges along with another student, Molly Wei. The indictment charges Ravi with bias intimidation, invasion of privacy, witness and evidence tampering, and ...

Two Rutgers Students Sue Police After Alleged Beating

Two Rutgers University students have filed a $2 million lawsuit against a New Jersey police department after they were allegedly beaten by officers in their apartment. Kareem Najjar and Jake Kostman say they were asleep when officers from the New Brunswick Police Department stormed into their apartment in the basement of an off-campus house Dec. 10 and began beating the college students in their beds without any warning and without identifying themselves as police. "We didn't know they were cops," Najjar, a 19-year-old sophomore, told AOL News today in a phone interview. "One was wearing ...

Lawyers Defend Students Accused of Filming Tyler Clementi

(Oct. 6) -- Lawyers for the two Rutgers University freshmen accused of secretly filming a classmate who later killed himself say hate crime charges are not justified and that many unfair assumptions have been made about their clients. Tyler Clementi's Choice: Sex, Death and Video-Rape at Rutgers

If you try to draw a line between hate crimes and natural human behavior, you'd better have a good eraser. On Sept. 22, violinist and Rutgers freshman Tyler Clementi jumped to his death after video of a (gay) sexual encounter was secretly filmed and posted on the Internet, allegedly by fellow students Dharun Ravi and Molly Wei. So far, Ravi and Wei have been charged with invasion of privacy, but some people are calling for hate-crime prosecution. My Woman Up colleague Mia Navarro quotes a New York Times commenter who says his students live in a technology bubble where they rarely encounter ...

Social Media's Expanding Role in College Admissions

Why did a recent Facebook virus requiring users to join a group (and, in doing so, contract a spamming bug) have such devastating success? The promise to reveal "the status update that got a highschool [sic] student REJECTED from Harvard!" must have struck a chord. Though the page was a hoax, the response it earned reflects a growing apprehension about the increasing significance of social media in the college application and decision-making process. Establishing a presence on Facebook is a smart recruitment move for colleges, since the site's 350 million members, many of whom are in their ...
