Click here to visit the new home of Politics Daily!Indiana Deputy Attorney General Jeff Cox has been fired for remarks he made on Twitter last week, suggesting riot police in Wisconsin should use live ammunition when clearing protesters out of the Wisconsin Capitol building. The tweet led to a war of words between Cox and Mother Jones magazine editor Adam Weinstein, who uncovered and wrote about similar comments on Cox's blog. The blog has since been taken down. "Civility and courtesy toward all members of the public are very important to the Indiana attorney general's office. We respect individuals' First Amendment right to express their ...
The FBI is investigating labor leader Andy Stern as part of a corruption probe focusing on the Service Employees International Union, the organization he led for 14 years. Two people interviewed by federal agents as part of the investigation told The Associated Press that at issue are a six-figure book contract that Stern signed and money he approved to cover the salary of Alejandro Stephens, a former California SEIU official who allegedly performed no work. The book, "A Country That Works," was released in 2008. The Labor Department is participating in the investigation but officials there ...
Two of the nation's largest and most influential labor groups are joining financial forces to help elect pro-union candidates, mostly Democrats, in November. The AFL-CIO and the Service Employees International Union have a combined $88 million to spend on the midterm elections but it's not clear how much of that they will pool, The Wall Street Journal reported. The two unions will coordinate spending on races in 26 states, most of which are battlegrounds like California, Illinois, Pennsylvania and Ohio. Part of their effort will be to reach out to some 15 million union members and ...
LITTLE ROCK, Ark. -- Bill Clinton's message to Democrats here Friday about their heated two-way U.S. Senate battle was a simple one: a vote for incumbent Sen. Blanche Lincoln is a vote rank-and-file Arkansans, while a vote for Lt. Governor Bill Halter is a vote for outside labor unions and liberal activist groups. Don't be fooled, Clinton told the gathering of about 300 at Philander Smith College. The big, national unions supporting Halter are "using you and manipulating your vote," he said. Clinton returned to his home state Friday to lend support to the embattled Lincoln, who faces a ...
The new president of the 2.2 million-member Service Employees International Union, a powerhouse in U.S. campaigns, is putting more money into politics and more effort into cultivating smooth relations with other unions. In an interview with Politics Daily, President Mary Kay Henry also said reports that SEIU is broke are wrong. Henry, 52, elected to succeed Andy Stern, in some ways has a tough act to follow. Stern, the president for 14 years, doubled the size of the union during that time by expanding from health personnel to janitors, child-care workers and home health aides. He spent $60 ...
The NAACP and several labor unions will rally in Washington this fall to push for new jobs and to give a voice to working class Americans who say the conservative Tea Party movement doesn't represent their views. "It's very annoying to see the Tea Party folks on television all the time as if they're speaking for working people, while all they're doing is divide working people and push our agenda back, both racially and economically," George Gresham, a march organizer and local member of the Service Employees International Union, told The New York Times. "It is annoying that some people treat ...
Andrew Stern confirmed Wednesday that he's stepping down as president of the 2.2-million-member Service Employees International Union. "With the strength and power of SEIU members voices we have accomplished what once seemed unimaginable," Stern said in a statement released by the union. "And, I can imagine no greater honor than these hard-working Americans entrusting me to represent them and their voice." No reason was given for his resignation but a labor official said Tuesday that Stern "always supported term limits in the labor movement" and that he thought it was time to move ...
Andrew Stern plans to announce this week that he's stepping down as president of the 2.2-million-member Service Employees International Union. "He's always supported term limits in the labor movement" and believes it's time for him to move on, said a former labor official familiar with Stern's thinking. Stern joined SEIU in 1973, when he was a social worker, and has been president of the union since 1996. His life as president has been tumultuous, encompassing the death of his 13-year-old daughter, a divorce, and SEIU's secession from the AFL-CIO in 2005. At that time, Stern and other union ...
