Click here to visit the new home of Politics Daily! In appreciation of the great work by hard-digging journalists in our midst, PDI salutes investigative reporting in other publications: Bloody Money As noted in a previous PDI Watchdog column, the Senate Permanent Subcommittee on Investigations is looking into the effect of foreign corruption on America's pocketbooks and politics. A recent hearing revealed a seamy swirl of American lobbyists, real estate deals, and loopholes in our federal laws through which flood millions of dollars in truly dirty money, much of it also covered in the blood of those unlucky enough to be born under foreign ...
LONDON (Jan. 29) -- Star witness Tony Blair took the stand today in Britain's ongoing inquiry into why Britain joined the U.S.-led war in Iraq -- and why its forces were so ill-prepared for the chaos that followed Saddam Hussein's overthrow. The quizzing of the former prime minister has drawn the country's rapt attention as the climax to the formal questioning of dozens of diplomats, spy bosses and military chiefs since November. Blair arrived at the inquiry two hours early under heavy security and was driven into a back entrance at London's Queen Elizabeth II Conference Centre. A crowd of ...
Ali Hassan al-Majeed, Saddam Hussein's cousin who became known as "Chemical Ali" after he gassed 5,000 Iraqi Kurds in 1988, was executed Monday, CNN reports. He was hanged after being convicted in four separate trials for 13 counts of killings and genocide. Al-Majeed was held by the United States from the day of his capture in 2003 until 24 hours before he was to be executed, when he was turned over to Iraqi officials. The execution had been postponed for political reasons, and it is unclear what change led it to be suddenly carried out. In addition to the Kurdish genocide, Al-Majeed was ...
BAGHDAD (Jan. 25) -- Suicide bombers struck near three hotels popular with Western journalists and businessmen Monday just as Iraq announced the execution of Saddam Hussein's notorious cousin known as "Chemical Ali." At least 37 people were killed and more than 104 injured, security officials said. The blasts - coming in a span of about 15 minutes in downtown Baghdad - came shortly before state television announced that Ali Hassan al-Majid had been hanged. There was no claim of responsibility for the latest major attacks in Baghdad - about six weeks after a series of blasts killed 127 and ...
On Hardball yesterday, there was a considerable amount of give and take between host Chris Matthews and former Bush Press Secretary Ari Fleischer. While Fleischer stayed in the game by splitting hairs between stupidity and dishonesty, and by painting himself as Chris Matthews' victim, he strikes out with the bases loaded in the bottom of the ninth. It's a long clip, full of thrusts and parries, but Fleischer gives himself away in the interview's closing seconds: .msnbcLinks {font-size:11px; font-family:Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; color: #999; margin-top: 5px; background: transparent; ...
The Huffington Post is reporting that one of the lobbyists on the McCain campaign's roster, the transition team chief, has close connections with a fairly notorious figure: William Timmons, the Washington lobbyist who John McCain has named to head his presidential transition team, aided an influence effort on behalf of Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein to ease international sanctions against his regime. The two lobbyists who Timmons worked closely with over a five year period on the lobbying campaign later either pleaded guilty to or were convicted of federal criminal charges that they had acted ...
Speaking at a press conference with German Chancellor Angela Merkel at the close of his stop in Germany, President Bush said that he had no regrets about his decision to invade Iraq in 2003 and topple Saddam Hussein. Bush did say that the tone of some of the rhetoric he has employed in furtherance of U.S. policy goals in the broader war on terror could have contributed to international divisions over the war, telling the UK Times newspaper that phrases such as, "dead or alive," and, "bring it on," could have been expressed less stridently. But the president remained firm on the initial ...
The Senate Intelligence Committee has produced an election year report on the pre-war statements of the Bush Administration, concluding that the president and other top Administration officials twisted intelligence, overstated Iraq's links to terrorist groups, and ignored internal intelligence community debate in the run up to the Iraq war. Committee Chairman Sen. Jay Rockefeller (D-WV) released a statement along with the report, accusing the Administration of an effort to deliberately mislead the public about the danger posed by Saddam Hussein's regime."The president and his advisors [sic] ...
This old quote might hurt a bit. And McCain was only saying what everyone, including Democrats and liberals thought at the time. Still, the quote is good enough to score a few points. The mission of course, was indeed to remove Saddam and his regime from power. The mistake was in assuming that alone was sufficient to turn Iraq into a nice peaceful arab state like Kuwait. Which turned out not to be the case. ...
In a stunning announcement in connection with the indictment of a Michigan charity official, Federal prosecutors said yesterday that former Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein secretly financed a Congressional trip to Iraq in the run up to the Iraq War. The trip was undertaken by three anti-war Democrats in the month before the Congressional vote on the authorization to use military force against Iraq. Reps. Jim McDermott (D-WA), and Mike Thompson (D-CA), and then Rep. David Bonior (D-MI) visited Iraq on the trip arranged by Muthanna Al-Hanooti, the subject of the Federal indictment. For his ...
