But instead of a congregation, the historic, red-brick structure has a single occupant, the homeowner. Siamak Akhavan purchased the 20,000-square-foot building five years ago and transformed it into an unusual single-family residence. Now, he's ready to sell. He has put the former Golden Gate Lutheran Church on the market for $7.49 million. "Some people say that it's weird and eerie, but my perspective is that this is a house of the Lord," Marcus Miller, a real estate agent representing Akhavan, told AOL ...
LOS ANGELES (July 8) -- A white former transit officer was convicted of involuntary manslaughter Thursday in the videotaped shooting death of an unarmed black man on an Oakland train platform in an encounter that set off days of rioting in the city. Prosecutors had wanted Johannes Mehserle convicted of murdering 22-year-old Oscar Grant, who was shot once in the back as he lay face-down. The jury's conviction on the lesser charge raised concerns of a repeat of the unrest that followed the shooting on New Year's Day in 2009. At least five bystanders videotaped the incident in what was among ...
Several trends point to the beginning of the end of car culture in the United States. But are Americans seriously ready to embrace alternatives to automobiles? It's been a bad few years for cars in America. First, there was the auto industry bailout to the tune of $110 billion. Then, two of the three big carmakers -- GM and Chrysler -- went through bankruptcy. Finally, just when we thought that the future lay in turning Japanese, even the beloved Prius went off the road (literally) and Toyota has recalled nearly 9 million of its vehicles in the last few months. ...
Testimony in the legal challenge to California's Proposition 8 ended Wednesday with attorneys for the gay couples who are plaintiffs in the case expressing confidence the judge will rule in their favor, the Los Angeles Times reports. Defenders of Proposition 8 -- a ballot measure passed by voters in November 2008 that limited marriage to opposite-sex couples -- conceded that they may have to wait for a higher court to uphold the state's ban on gay marriage. Vaughn Walker, the judge in the case, is a Republican with libertarian views who is expected to favor the challengers. He could rule as ...
PACIFICA, Calif. (Jan. 23) -- It wasn't the thunderous sound of a massive chunk of ocean bluff plummeting to the beach that jarred Marva Seaton to life Thursday at 5:30 a.m., but a rap at her door. For her own safety, she was ordered out of her apartment building, perched atop an eroding seaside cliff about 80 feet above the sea just off scenic Highway 1 south of San Francisco. Still, like many of her neighbors who live in 18 units that have been evacuated over the past month, she planned to stay on the Pacific shoreline. "I just relocated down the street at the Land's End," Seaton said, ...
DENVER (Jan. 9) -- Military jets scrambled to intercept a San Francisco-bound jetliner reporting a problem aboard - one of two commercial airplanes diverted because of disruptive passengers. In addition, police at London's Heathrow Airport arrested three passengers after removing them from a jetliner bound for Dubai. Police said the three men allegedly made a bomb threat on an Emirates airline passenger jet Friday night as it was about to take off. A search of the plane found nothing suspicious. The other passengers were taken off the plane and put up in a hotel overnight. Friday's ...
SAN FRANCISCO (Dec. 30) -- Two mysteries surround a huge herd of sea lions that were hanging out on a pier in San Francisco Bay: Why did so many show up, and why did so many leave at once? Last month, Pier 39, famous in San Francisco for its sea lions and the throngs of tourists they attract, was groaning under the weight of more than 1,500 of the animals. The record number delighted tourists and baffled experts. Marine experts suspect the sea lions came and stayed for the food, then left largely for the same reason. ...
(Dec. 14) -- The U.S. Supreme Court said Monday that it would hear a case to clarify the extent of the rights of employers to read text messages sent and received by their employees on employer-issued equipment. Jeff Quon, a police sergeant in Ontario, Calif., is alleged to have used a work pager to send hundreds of personal, sometimes sexually explicit, text messages to his wife, his girlfriend and another officer, The Wall Street Journal reported. The Ontario Police Department had been investigating officers who had exceeded their plan's monthly limit for text messages and learned the ...
By a 9-2 vote, San Francisco's Board of Supervisors passed a measure Tuesday making it a crime for pet owners to declaw their cats. Violators face a potential jail sentence of six months and fine of up to $1,000. The Los Angeles City Council plans to vote on a similar resolution Friday. "Declawing cats is cruel and a form of torture," said the San Francisco measure's author, Ross Mirkarimi, who represents the city's 5th District. "It has not proven to be medically necessary." In part, Mirkarimi and his counterparts brought the matter to a vote in order to beat a Jan. 1, 2010, deadline that ...
San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom wants to tax your butt. You know, the one that makes up roughly one third the length of a cigarette and routinely ends up littering the sidewalk. In an effort to deter smoking even further, and help defray the cost of paying to clean up all the discarded butts from streets and municipal drain pipes, Newsom, who has announced his intention to run for governor in California, would slap an additional 33 cents to the price of a pack of cigarettes. Needless to say, tobacco companies are not happy with this idea, that makes an already heavily taxed product even more ...
