Click here to visit the new home of Politics Daily!Victoria Jackson sure loves to talk about politics. The former "Saturday Night Live" star joined a panel called "Getting Started in Hollywood" at this year's Conservative Political Action Conference, or CPAC. While some panel members, including Variety deputy editor Ted Johnson, doubted there was a widespread movement to suppress conservatives in Hollywood, Jackson disagreed: "They just don't dislike Christians, they hate God," said Jackson, who later added, "You don't know how liberal it is, even the Christians are communist. ... Do you see me on TV? No. Do you see me in movies? ...
It's not an easy gig following the president on stage, but Seth Meyers is up for it. The Saturday Night Live head writer and cast member has been tapped to host next year's White House Correspondents' Association Dinner, Politico reported Wednesday. Meyers seems like a perfect fit for Washington's annual see-and-be-seen social event ("the Oscars-for-the-C-Span-set," as Politics Daily's Walter Shapiro dubbed it). Meyers' arsenal of political humor is kept sharp on SNL's skewer-the-news segment "Weekend Update." President Obama, members of Congress, Sarah Palin and other headline-grabbing ...
(Dec. 7) -- When it comes to WikiLeaks, not every news story about the whistle-blower group has to be so doom and gloom. As the general public clings to each new development in the ongoing Julian Assange saga, the lighthearted among us can't help but poke a little fun at the recent WikiLeaks uproar. What better than humor, after all, to defuse the nightly reports of gaping security holes and shady dealings in the U.S. government? So stop worrying about that "poison pill" and enjoy the humorous side of WikiLeaks, as presented by the Surge Desk. Some of the leaks are downright ...
(Nov. 2) -- The writers of "Saturday Night Live" were not so kind to President Barack Obama back in October 2009 when the show's opening sketch blasted him for falling short of the goals he set out to accomplish when he assumed office nearly 10 months earlier. "When you look at my record, it's very clear what I've done so far and that is nothing," said Fred Armisen as Obama during the show's Oct. 3, 2009, episode. "Nada. Almost one year and nothing to show for it." With midterm elections in full swing, it seems the sketch still resonates with voters as they duke it out on the Web, debating ...
(Oct. 13) -- A conceptual artist in New York is doing for the glockenspiel what Christopher Walken did for the cowbell. Sort of. Artist Cory Arcangel was so impressed by Bruce Springsteen's use of the high-pitched percussion instrument on three tracks of his seminal mid-1970s album "Born to Run" (including the title cut) that he thought he'd add extra glockenspiel tracks on the other songs. "I had always wanted to write a composition which was to be played in tandem with another. An addendum. I thought this was an interesting way to predetermine the variables I would be working with when ...
(Oct. 12) -- What's the first thing that pops into your mind when you think of Christine O'Donnell? For a big percentage of Google users, the number one answer turns out to be "witch." Don't believe it? Go to Google's homepage, and start typing in "Christine O'Donnell." Immediately after hitting the "O" key in "O'Donnell" you will notice that the search engine's "autocomplete" feature will offer you suggestions as to how to finish your search. And the first suggestion, which indicates the most-searched-for combination of keywords, or search terms, is "Christine O'Donnell witch." Here's a ...
Gov. David Paterson of New York accomplished something on the season opener of "Saturday Night Live" that few others -- if any -- have ever managed: He got an apology. Actually, he got three. As the NBC late-night comedy show began its 36th season of satirizing virtually everyone and everything it wants to, Paterson showed up side by side with Fred Armisen (see video below), who has done a devastating caricature of the governor since 2008, when Paterson took office after Eliot Spitzer resigned in a sex scandal. Click play below to watch the video: Armisen's first one-eye-closed appearance ...
LOS ANGELES (Aug. 22) -- The Betty White phenomenon keeps getting bigger. White won an Emmy Award for best guest actress in a comedy series for her turn as "Saturday Night Live" host. The honor came Saturday at the creative arts ceremony that is precursor to the main Aug. 29 Emmy show. The trophy is the fifth prime-time Emmy received by the 88-year-old White, according to the TV academy. Her previous honors came for classic sitcoms including "The Mary Tyler Moore Show" and "The Golden Girls." So far this year, besides the "SNL" gig, White made a splash with the new TV Land sitcom "Hot in ...
(Aug. 20) -- They say you can't go home again, but for the stars of the new TV sitcom "Big Lake," that old adage simply doesn't apply. "Big Lake," which airs at 10 p.m. EDT Tuesdays on Comedy Central, comes from the minds of Will Ferrell and Adam McKay, who penned the Ferrell vehicles "Anchorman," "Talladega Nights" and "The Other Guys." It's about a guy in his late 20s who loses his job as a hot-shot investment banker and is forced to move back to his parents' house in the tiny fictional town of Big Lake, Pa. That hero-to-zero is played by New York-based actor Chris Gethard, 30, best known ...
