Lobbying a Hate Crimes Bill with Real Grassroots Activists

Lobbying a Hate Crimes Bill with Real Grassroots Activists

The U.S. House of Representatives passed the Matthew Shepard Act this week, adding protections to existing law for victims of crimes based on the victim's actual or perceived gender, sexual orientation, gender identity, or disability. The bill now goes to the Senate, where I spent the early part of this week. I followed a group of citizens who are trying to persuade their senators to support the inclusion of transgender people in the final bill. This isn't the kind of lobbying that has given this kind of work a bad name. These aren't well-funded corporate hacks trying to carve out a sweet deal ...

GOP 3 for 3 in Post-Election Run-Off Contests

The Republican has not had much to celebrate recently, suffering historic election losses in two consecutive elections and losing the White House. But since Election Day, Republican candidates have won three consecutive run-off elections, giving some in the party hope that Republicans' future political prospects are not as bleak as they seemed just one month ago.The GOP run at success began with Sen. Saxby Chambliss' resounding win over Democrat Jim Martin in the Georgia Senate run-off. Chambliss had garnered just .2% less than the required 50% on Election Day, forcing the rematch. ...

Georgia Runoff an Early Test for Barack Obama

Georgia Runoff an Early Test for Barack Obama

President-elect Barack Obama faces his first political test today in Georgia, where Democrat Jim Martin is challenging incumbent Republican Sen. Saxby Chambliss in a run-off election to determine the winner of the U.S. Senate race there. Although Obama has not visited Georgia in support of Martin, he has spent some of his political capital on Martin's campaign; sending campaign volunteers from neighboring states to assist in the run-off, and personally recording a radio ad and robocalls for Martin. The effort by Obama is part of the Democratic Party's push to reach 60 votes in the Senate, ...

Georgia Showdown: Sarah Palin vs. Miss Alaska

Georgia Showdown: Sarah Palin vs. Miss Alaska

Tomorrow's Senate run-off election in Georgia presents Sarah Palin with the opportunity to settle an old score. Not only can she partially avenge the thumping that she and the rest of the GOP took at the hands of the Obama-Biden Democrats, she can also redeem her unsuccessful bid to become 1984's Miss Alaska. From The Atlanta Journal-Constitution: Martin spokesman Matt Canter also said Democrat (Jim Martin) will have "Georgia's own Miss Alaska" on hand to sing the national anthem at a 5:30 p.m. rally at the Capitol. Atlanta-based recording artist Maryline Blackburn won the 1984 Miss Alaska ...

Sarah Palin:'We All Have Georgia on Our Minds'

Sarah Palin:'We All Have Georgia on Our Minds'

Before a crowd of 3,000-4,000 earlier today, former GOP Vice-Presidential candidate Sarah Palin framed tomorrow's Senate run-off as the first step in the GOP's comeback. From AJC:"The eyes of the nation are on you," Palin told several thousand people at the James Brown Arena for her 8:55 a.m. speech, the first of four appearances in the state. "We all have Georgia on our mind.""It takes rebuilding, and I say, let that begin here in Georgia tomorrow," Palin said. She said Chambliss is needed to provide a check on the Democratic majority. She stressed Chambliss's support for gun rights, ...

Georgia Runoff Update: Zell Miller Endorses Saxby Chambliss

Georgia Runoff Update: Zell Miller Endorses Saxby Chambliss

Zell Miller is one of the few examples of a politician who moves right after spending time in Washington D.C. After supporting Georgia Democrat Max Cleland in 2002 and speaking at the GOP convention in 2004, he is now supporting Republican Saxby Chambliss. This is a big get for Chambliss.Georgia's maverick Democrat Zell Miller threw his support behind Sen. Saxby Chambliss Wednesday saying he "could well be the last man standing between a far, far left liberal agenda sailing through the Senate."A former Georgia senator and governor, Miller remains a Democrat but has lined up behind prominent ...

Georgia Run-Off:Sarah Palin to Campaign For Saxby Chambliss

I guess Chambliss is conceding the turkey vote. Former Vice Presidential candidate and current poultry snuff film star Sarah Palin is set to hit the stump for Georgia incumbent Senator Saxby Chambliss on Dec. 1. From Redstate: Columbus, GA television station WRBL reports that Palin will make four campaign appearances with Chambliss December 1: Governor Palin will join Saxby for four public rallies across the state on Monday, December 1st: 8:30 am in Augusta; 11:00 am in Savannah; 1:30 pm in Perry; and 4:00 pm in north metro Atlanta. Obama Featured in Senate Runoff Ad

Obama Featured in Senate Runoff Ad

Democrat Jim Martin is counting on exploiting an Obama association in his attempt to unseat GOP Senator Saxby Chambliss. The association in question? His own.Martin is running an ad touting Chambliss' opposition to Obama's policies, complete with the standard photographic juxtaposition. Is it me, or is this vaguely reminiscent of that Brady Bunch episode where Marcia impulsively claims to be friends with Davy Jones in order to impress her friends? The ad also quotes Chambliss as saying, at an appearance in Cumming, Ga, that he doesn't know what the word recession means. I know how he feels. I ...

Bill Clinton Back to the Campaign Trail

Bill Clinton Back to the Campaign Trail

If, in the wake of this year's historic and historically-long election, you still find yourself trolling the internet for relevant polling data, or casually checking cable news channels to see if a candidate, even one for 2012, might be delivering a speech of some kind, then you may be suffering Acute Campaign Withdrawal Syndrome. Clearly, the comedown from media frenzy that marked the '08 contest is not easy for a lot of people. Neither the half-hearted speculation as to who will fill the Obama administration's top posts, nor the handicapping of the prospective Republican field can really ...

Ted Stevens Falls Behind in Senate Race

Ted Stevens Falls Behind in Senate Race

According to the latest unofficial count from the Anchorage Daily News, Democrat Mark Begich has pulled ahead of convicted felon Ted Stevens in the Alaska Senate race. By three votes.Interestingly, there were 670 write-in votes cast in the race, meaning that each candidate can now kick himself for not courting the endorsements of, respectively, Mike Hunt, Richard Hertz, and Haywood D'Jableaumee. As Caleb Howe reported earlier, at length, things are looking up in Minnesota for Democrat Al Franken. As Ben Smith points out, success there and in the December 12 Georgia runoff (the election, not the ...
