Secret Scientists Claim to Create Rain in Arab Desert

A secret scientific program to control the weather has seen artificially created storms rain down on the Middle Eastern desert. Recent reports say Swiss scientists working for the ruler of the Emirate of Abu Dhabi last year successfully created 52 rainstorms in a usually arid region of the United Arab Emirates, using secret technology. Most of the storms were created in Al Ain, near Abu Dhabi, during July and August -- the height of summer when conditions are usually parched. Dalai Lama and Scientists Dig Compassion, Differ on Approach

(Oct. 18) -- Even for someone known for his nomadic ways, the Dalai Lama has been on quite a journey lately, albeit an academic one. First, on Thursday, the 14th spiritual leader of Tibet visited Stanford University in Palo Alto, Calif., where he spent two days giving talks, including one before a conference of top-tier scientists hoping to determine the neurobiological roots of social compassion and empathy. Then, on Sunday, he showed up for a three-day-long stay at Emory University in Atlanta, appearing under the title "Presidential Distinguished Professor" and lecturing on behalf of a ...

Opinion: Dude, Where's My Flying Car?

In my case, that was to become a space-suited technician in a dusty lunar city. AP Photo/Heinz Ducklau This year also happens to coincide with the 40th anniversary of the moon landing, the first time a human being ever set foot on another world. This event was always in the background during my '70s-era childhood, that giant leap for mankind a mere first step toward .... what? Huge, circular space stations, gracefully pirouetting in low Earth ...

Video: PUMAs, Birthers, Tea Parties Get Their Own Sci Fi Series - V!

Science fiction has a long tradition of embedding political messages into far-out scenarios. Most recently, The Sci Fi Channel's Battlestar Galactica remake held a mirror up to many of the Bush era's dilemmas. Now, it looks like ABC is putting out a remake that flips the script. See if you can catch the oh-so-subtle parallels in this trailer for V:Let me start off by saying that I will totally be watching this. Wild cylons couldn't keep me away. Phasers are set on "Teh Awesome!" You get the picture. The original V had cool effects (for the time), a mean streak of black humor, and a heavy hand ...

Battlestar Galactica: Best Poli-SciFi Videos

Battlestar Galactica, the aforementioned best political show on television, returns to Sci-Fi Channel tonight with the much-awaited movie, "Razor" (check local listings). Check out the trailer and several "flashback" shorts that were shot as backstory for the new movie below. The re-imagined Battlestar Galactica is not your father's space parable. Updated for a generation who thinks Richard Hatch is a tax-dodging reality show winner, this iteration eschews campy mythology references in favor of a much darker political allegory. Those familiar with the show know of it's unblinking examinations ...
