(Nov. 3) -- Christine O'Donnell isn't letting a little thing like a big loss get in the way of midterm election fun. The tea-party-backed GOP Senate candidate was plainly trounced by Democrat Chris Coons in a race many say helped map out the limits of the tea party's influence. But while the colorful candidate may be off the mat, she's still fighting on, railing against the Republican Party's leadership and vowing to hold Democrats accountable for their big-spending ways. The defiance came through loud and clear in her concession speech Tuesday night, which was just about as unorthodox as ...
In the final stretch of this volatile and polarizing midterm election, while the beleaguered Democrats duck to ward off an approaching Republican steamroller, rippling cracks are widening in two of the most reliable and loyal Democratic voting blocs, women and Latinos. The past several weeks have exposed troubling frustration, anger and apathy among white Democratic female voters and among Latino Democrats. More alarming for Democrats than the "enthusiasm gap" between Democrats and Republicans is emerging evidence that women and Latinos are drifting away from their longtime political home and ...
(Oct 11) -- Joe Manchin, West Virginia's governor and a Senate candidate, is taking aim at the notion that he's just another Democratic candidate running at a time when Democrats are not doing so well. In his latest campaign advertisement for the 2010 Senate race, Manchin gets decked out in full hunting gear for a back-country excursion to vent some frustrations against the Washington status quo -- specifically cap and trade. See the video for yourself: While he didn't exactly obliterate the cap-and-trade bill as he had hoped, Surge Desk nevertheless commends Manchin on his excellent ...

(Aug. 19) -- One thing we can be sure -- yet again -- was not responsible for Senate candidate Alvin Greene's mysterious victory in the South Carolina Democratic primary was his way with words. Indeed, it's almost impossible to summarize the recent conversation he had with the Charleston City Paper, so little did he actually say. The weekly had the somewhat inspired idea to ask Greene, a University of South Carolina alumnus, to share advice on college life, and in return got back these complete answers: What to do if you have a bad roommate, Mr. Greene? Stay alone. Do without a ...
A lawsuit on behalf of three Arkansas voters against the Garland County Election Commission was filed late Tuesday afternoon, adding a dramatic twist to Tuesday's runoff between incumbent Sen. Blanche Lincoln and Lt. Governor Bill Halter for the Democratic Senate nomination. The lawsuit, filed by Hot Springs attorney Ben Hooten, states that the commission intentionally scheduled only two polling sites for "the purpose of disenfranchising " minority, elderly, poor and disabled voters in the county. It also says that "the greater part of the voting electorate are unable to find or reach" the ...
A voting drama looms in Arkansas' Democratic senate race between incumbent Sen. Blanche Lincoln and Lt. Gov. Bill Halter. The battleground? Garland County, a populous county that sits 55 miles from Little Rock. It was the most heavily populated county that Halter won in the May 18 primary. On that day, the county had 41 polling places open, but for Tuesday's runoff, there will only open two in order to save money. Obviously, that plan does not set well with Halter. "We certainly are concerned that Garland County, which has over 80,000 Arkansas citizens and had approximately 40 polling ...
Republican Scott Brown leads Democrat Martha Coakley 51 percent to 46 percent with 4 percent undecided in a tight race to fill the seat of the late Sen. Edward Kennedy that will be decided in a Tuesday special election, according to a Public Policy Polling survey conducted Jan. 16-17. The margin of error is 2.8 points and PPP says "other factors, such as refusal to be interviewed and weighting, may introduce additional error that is more difficult to quantify." ...
Arkansas Republican candidate for US Senate Kim "Tippi" Hendren put his foot in his mouth when he referred to NY Senator Chuck Schumer as "that Jew" at a party meeting last week:Hendren told me, "At the meeting I was attempting to explain that unlike Sen. Schumer, I believe in traditional values, like we used to see on 'The Andy Griffith Show.' I made the mistake of referring to Sen. Schumer as 'that Jew' and I should not have put it that way as this took away from what I was trying to say." Hendren has since offered an apology to Senator Schumer:"I ought not to have referred to it at all," ...
