Alcohol Gets More Dangerous as You Get Older

(July 10) -- A new UCLA study has supported scientists' concerns that alcohol abuse by the elderly has become a major national health problem. The researchers found that more than a third of American drinkers age 60 and over are at risk of harm because of alcohol's interaction with their diseases or their medications -- or simply because they are imbibing too much. Among those at risk, a total of about 9 million people, more than half fit into at least two of those risk categories, and almost a third were in all three. Obama Urges Senate to Prevent Medicare Payment Cuts for Doctors

Obama Urges Senate to Prevent Medicare Payment Cuts for Doctors

President Obama urged Senate Republicans Saturday to go along with legislation preventing a looming 21 percent reduction in Medicare reimbursements for doctors. But the president also said he realized that "simply kicking these cuts down the road another year is not a long-term solution to this problem." In his weekly address, Obama said doctors would face cuts of more than one-fifth in Medicare payments this week unless the Senate agrees to defer the lower reimbursement formula, as it has since 2003. The reduced payment schedule, put in place a decade ago, was an attempt to slow the rapid ...

Seniors Should Stop Worrying (and Whining) About Health Reform

Seniors are squeaky wheels in the political system. They complain, they vote, and they're growing in number. If they seem querulous and wary about health reform, let's face it: This group, with its very own single-payer government health care program, has a lot of turf worth protecting. We've had our summer of unhinged talk about death panels and sniping over which party is a bigger threat to Medicare. But now the major congressional health bills from the House and from the Senate are finally on the table, and it's time for a reality check. There are 43 million people on Medicare and it ...

Obama's Social Security Claim Debunked

Campaigning in Florida on Saturday, Sen. Barack Obama attempted to capitalize on last week's turmoil on Wall Street to take a shot at Sen. John McCain's plan for reforming Social Security. Obama told the assembled crowd in the senior citizen rich state that under McCain's plan for Social Security, senior citizens would have lost their benefits as a result of the troubled investment market."I'll protect Social Security, while John McCain wants to privatize it. Without Social Security half of elderly women would be living in poverty - half. But if my opponent had his way, the millions of ...

Jamie Moyer Might Pitch Until He's 50

Jamie Moyer Might Pitch Until He's 50

With the Pittsburgh Pirates and Philadelphia Phillies getting together for a few games over the weekend, members of the media asked Pirates manager John Russell for his opinion on the game's oldest player, Jamie Moyer. After all, Russell was Moyer's catcher with the Texas Rangers back in 1990, so he knows a little something about him. While praising Jamie's work ethic and preparation, Russell went on to say that he wouldn't be surprised if Moyer, who's now 45, pitched until he was 50.Obviously the media then ran over to Moyer's locker to ask him what he thought about the idea, and though ...
