The Health Battles That Won't Die: Lieberman, Taxes, Abortion and (Oh, Yeah!) the House

The Health Battles That Won't Die: Lieberman, Taxes, Abortion and (Oh, Yeah!) the House

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid showed just how ugly legislating can get on Monday night, when he called the members of his exhausted, fractured caucus together for an emergency meeting to discuss health reform. Once inside the large room in the Capitol, he gave them a reality check and a choice. First, the reality check: The only people keeping the Democrats from passing health care reform were other Democrats. Sen. Joe Lieberman, an independent who caucuses with the Democrats, had announced the day before that he would filibuster the bill if it contained a Medicare expansion, while a ...

Confused Democrats Appear to Welcome Phil Spector to Their Party

Confused Democrats Appear to Welcome Phil Spector to Their Party

You can imagine how thrilled freshman Senator Kirsten Gillibrand (D-NY) was by the news that her party was adding a national celebrity to its ranks. After all, the Senator is a huge Ronettes fan and loved the re-orchestration of "The Long and Winding Road"!At least that's what we assume motivated Sen. Gillibrand when she issued a public statement reading: "GILLIBRAND WELCOMES SENATOR SPECTOR TO DEMOCRATIC PARTY."See the only American Spector who's famous enough to be referenced by his last name alone is legendary record producer Phil Spector, architect of hits ranging from "You've Lost That ...

Back to Ohio

Back to Ohio

Yahoo! News Obama has long looked for a way to win the White House without the 20 electoral votes of Ohio, the prototypical swing state. His top aides, including his campaign manager, once said they could lose the state and still win the election by picking off states that typically support Republicans. ...The campaign is quietly eyeing a states' map similar to the one used in past elections, with some exceptions. Obama this week dropped advertising in Georgia, a traditionally Republican state that he considered winnable based on increased voter registration among blacks and young people. It ...

McCain/Obama NAFTA Brawl Heats Up

McCain/Obama NAFTA Brawl Heats Up

It was reported on these pages yesterday that Barack Obama was backing away from his opposition to NAFTA, based on an interview with Fortune magazine. There was an Obama campaign conference call today to discuss John McCain's positions on trade, but I decided it would be a good time to clear up Senator Obama's, first. Tommy Christopher: On the subject of that Fortune interview, I understand (Obama's) core position (worker and environmental protections) hasn't changed, but I believe at the debates, he said we should use a pull-out as a hammer to advance that, so without that, where are the ...

Senator Sherrod Brown in a Quandary

Senator Sherrod Brown in a Quandary

Environmentalists in Ohio are putting heat on Sherrod Brown: What's interesting about this is that the Ohio economy has taken two body blows in just the last week due primarily to high fuel prices. First DHL decided to give up and outsource their overnight delivery to UPS, which kills about 6,000 jobs in Wilmington, a small community in a rural part of southwest Ohio. And just a few days ago, GM decided to close a truck plant in Dayton. The latter was partially offset by more small cars in Lordstown, but the problem for Sherrod remains. And that's not even getting into the politics around ...

Playing the Gender Card

By  Dave - Politics Daily
Playing the Gender Card

Although no one would accuse Hillary Clinton of being shy, I don't think even she would play the Gender card this brazenly. Connie Schultz is a columnist at the Cleveland Plain Dealer, and the wife of Senator Sherrod Brown (D-Ohio), also, apparently, a Hillary Clinton fan: Someone tell me, please, how grown men in 2008 can believe it's their right - their duty, even - to tell a woman when she should rein in her ambition and go home. Male columnists, male politicians, male talking heads, male "surrogates" - all of them harrumphing that it's time for Hillary Clinton to stop it, just stop it, ...
