National Parks Face Shutdown on Eve of Civil War Anniversary

FORT SUMTER NATIONAL MONUMENT, S.C. -- The looming shutdown of the federal government includes the National Parks Service, which could mean events commemorating the start of the Civil War with a Confederate attack on Fort Sumter may have to happen without the fort itself. A shutdown would also affect trips to the nation's capital, where the Smithsonian and the National Zoo would be among the first to close, and could cause spring break campers out West to find Yosemite and other parks closed. Ben Margot, AP If the federal government shuts down, all 394 National Park Service sites ...

Exhibits Spared From Damage in Smithsonian Fire

An outbuilding of the Smithsonian's Museum of Natural History caught fire this morning, sending a large plume of smoke over the National Mall and snarling rush-hour traffic in downtown Washington, D.C., but apparently sparing adjacent museum exhibits from any damage, The Washington Post reported. Smithsonian spokeswoman Linda St. Thomas said the museum is expected to be open today, according to radio station WTOP . The fire was caused by welding work being done on the roof of the building, which houses heating and air-conditioning equipment, a firefighter who was on the scene told WTOP. A ...

Shipwrecked 2,000-Year-Old Pills Give Clues to Ancient Medicine

Scientists are trying to unravel the mystery of whether pills found in a 2,000-year-old shipwreck were, in fact, created and used as effective plant-based medicines. And the bigger question: Could the ingredients of these ancient tablets still work to help with modern illnesses? Around 130 B.C., a ship, identified as the Relitto del Pozzino, sank off Tuscany, Italy. Among the artifacts found on board in 1989 were glass cups, a pitcher and ceramics, all of which suggested that the ship was sailing from the eastern Mediterranean area. Harry A. Alden A microscopic image shows the ...

Warhol Foundation Threatens Smithsonian Over Pulled Exhibit

(Dec. 14) -- The Andy Warhol Foundation to America's Attic: Put back that exhibit or we won't give you any more money. The battle between the private arts foundation and the Smithsonian Institution got even testier this week when Warhol executives threatened to cut off funding unless the National Portrait Gallery reinstates a video, "A Fire in My Belly," by the late artist David Wojnarowicz. The Smithsonian removed an edited, four-minute version of the work last month after the Catholic League and several conservative politicians -- including about-to-be House Speaker John Boehner, R-Ohio -- ...

Smithsonian Pulls Controversial Crucifix Video After Congressional Complaint

A work of video art briefly depicting a figurine of Christ with ants crawling on it has been yanked from the Smithsonian's Portrait Gallery after complaints from a Catholic group and members of Congress. The four-minute video, made by the late New York City artist David Wojnarowicz, features an 11-second segment of a small crucifix teeming with the insects. It had been on exhibit since Oct. 30 as part of a show on sexual difference in American portrait art. The piece was labeled "hate speech" by Catholic League president William Donohue and a misuse of taxpayer money by the office of Rep. ...

Smithsonian Removes Jesus Video From Gay Exhibit

(Dec. 1) -- The Smithsonian has removed a video from an exhibit on gay love at its National Portrait Gallery after conservative groups and lawmakers condemned the art as "hate speech" intended to offend Christians ahead of Christmas. Art historians and curators say the video, which depicts Jesus on a crucifix covered with ants, was created in 1987 as a statement about the universal suffering caused by AIDS. In the eye of some beholders, however, the exhibit, which features works from acclaimed artists like John Singer Sargent and Georgia O'Keeffe, is simple blasphemy. Some conservative ...

Artist Makes Kevin Bacon Statue Out of Bacon

(Sept. 29) -- Here's a little food for thought: What if Hollywood actor Kevin Bacon were actually made out of tasty, crispy bacon? Well, that delicious dream is now a reality thanks to J&D Foods, a Seattle company that specializes in all things bacon, from its very own bacon-flavored salt and mayonnaise -- aka "Baconnaise" -- to bacon-flavored lip balm and "MMMvelopes," envelopes that taste like bacon when the seal is licked. Since owners Justin Esch and Dave Lefkow live by the motto "everything is better with bacon," the duo -- in partnership with bacon-crafting website What Do Bacon Do? -- ...

Meryl Streep to Raise Money for Embattled National Women's History Museum

Meryl Streep to Raise Money for Embattled National Women's History Museum

Actress Meryl Streep -- who has played such strong females as culinary pioneer Julia Child and nuclear plant whistleblower Karen Silkwood -- will headline a Sept. 21 benefit in Washington for the National Museum of Women's History. Although no taxpayer money will be spent on the museum that organizers hope to build near the Smithsonian-dominated National Mall, its congressional champions have spent 12 years vainly trying to pass a bill allowing museum officials to buy federal land for the project. Two earlier Washington sites -- the Post Office Pavilion and the Smithsonian Arts and Industries ...

Smithsonian Snags Memorabilia From Glenn Beck, Al Sharpton Rallies

There is a reason the Smithsonian Institution is affectionately known as "The Nation's Attic." Its curators and historians collect all manner of stuff. And Saturday, Aug. 28, was just another work day, as staffers at the Smithsonian's National Museum of American History went on the hunt for memorabilia to add to the collection of 3 million items. From Glenn Beck's "Restoring Honor" rally at the Lincoln Memorial -- held on the 47th anniversary of the Rev. Martin Luther King's "I Have a Dream speech" and massive civil rights march -- they snapped up "a water bottle, pamphlets, leaflets, ...

Gary Cooper in Red Lipstick: The Two Sides of Norman Rockwell

The much-publicized exhibition "Telling Stories: Norman Rockwell From the Collections of George Lucas and Steven Spielberg" at the Smithsonian American Art Museum (through Jan. 2, 2011) can be enjoyed on at least a couple of levels. I, of course, prefer the subversive interpretation. I am one of those readers who prefers the bloody-minded Robert Frost of "Design" and "Never Again Would Bird's Song Be the Same" to the kindly old white-maned Yankee bard cherished by my third-grade teacher, Miss Martin -- all the while admiring Frost for being able to appeal to the both of us. Likewise I see ...
