(Dec. 7) -- Suddenly, he's everywhere. Independent U.S. Sen. Bernie Sanders of Vermont indicated Monday that he may seek to filibuster the new deal struck between President Barack Obama and Republicans over keeping the Bush tax cuts in place for the wealthiest Americans in exchange for a 13-month extension of unemployment benefits for those Americans out of work for longer than six months. Sanders, who has described himself as a "socialist," spoke to liberal MSNBC host Ed Schultz about what he views as a betrayal. Days earlier, on the floor of the Senate, Sanders delivered an ...
(Dec. 6) -- A recent poll indicates that 58 percent of Americans favor repealing at least some of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act. I'm guessing that many of these opponents either oppose it because of misunderstandings about the abortion provisions or because they have been told -- and believe -- that this act represents fiscal madness and/or the slow creep toward socialism in the United States. If the Affordable Care Act were socialism, it would have had the power to remake every agency in the government and redesign how government spends its money. But the Affordable Care ...
(Nov. 12) -- One Friday night at my home, a dear friend who runs a large charitable foundation raised his glass to toast the demise of the tea party, which he branded a group of racists, xenophobes and bigots. Taken aback, I responded that to my knowledge the tea party is focused simply on more limited government and the reduction of government spending. I didn't know racism was part of the platform, I said. But he was adamant that the tea party's small-government rhetoric was an attack on low-income minorities. Lost in the debate about the morality of the tea party is any discussion about ...
(Sept. 15) -- What does a tea party candidate stand for? For Christine O'Donnell, who clobbered nine-term Republican Rep. Mike Castle to earn the party's Senate nomination in Delaware, the answer to that question has both surprising and not-so-surprising answers. While Republican strategist Karl Rove has been raising red flags over what he terms the "nutty things she has been saying," her defenders see an outspoken woman who demonstrates refreshing consistency. But as the nation gets to know O'Donnell, three interesting views that she has espoused have come to the fore. Surge Desk has the ...
(Sept. 9) -- None other than Fidel Castro himself now appears to have given up on Cuba's archaic communist system. The revolutionary leader last week launched a surprise attack on the state-controlled economy he helped create 50 years ago during an interview with Jeffrey Goldberg, a correspondent for The Atlantic magazine. Goldberg asked the aging leader if Cuba's economic system was still worth exporting to other nations and was stunned by Castro's brutally honest response. "The Cuban model doesn't even work for us anymore," said the 84-year-old former president, Goldberg wrote in a blog ...
(Sept. 1) -- Quick, which is the more efficient model for labor organization: European-style socialism or American capitalism? The answer may surprise you, according to Thomas Geoghan, an American labor lawyer and author of the new book "Were You Born on the Wrong Continent? How the European Model Can Help You Get a Life." First, some numbers: American workers are on the job for 1,804 hours a year, compared with 1,436 hours for Germany, Europe's most vibrant economy. That's the "equivalent of nine extra 40-hour workweeks per year," observes Salon contributor Alex Jung, in his conversation ...

A Tea Party-sponsored billboard in Iowa that ties President Obama to Adolf Hitler and Vladimir Lenin -- complete with large photos of the three -- got plenty of attention, but not necessarily the kind that the group wanted. The outdoor ad in Mason City, put up about a week ago by the North Iowa Tea Party, was removed Wednesday and replaced with a public service announcement, the company that owns the billboard said. The original sign included the labels Democrat Socialism, National Socialism and Marxist Socialism above the enlarged photographs, the Associated Press reported Wednesday. ...
(July 13) -- Look, up in the sky: It's Hitler, it's that guy who came before Stalin, it's Obama the socialist! At least that's the scene set by a controversial new roadside billboard in rural Iowa that puts the president literally right in the middle of two of history's most infamous totalitarian leaders, Adolf Hitler and Vladimir Lenin. Have a look: Deb Nicklay, Globe Gazette / AP The North Iowa Tea Party's latest billboard features, from left, Adolf Hitler, Barack Obama and Vladimir Lenin. Put up last week, the display has already drawn numerous complaints, including from other national ...
