NATO Sends In Stealth Sub to Combat African Pirates

(June 28) -- Escalating the international fight against pirates in one of the world's busiest shipping lanes, NATO is sending a Dutch submarine to the east coast of Africa to help monitor communications between pirate vessels and the warlords who control them onshore. The alliance said today that one of four Walrus-class submarines in the Royal Netherlands Navy will start patrolling waters from the Gulf of Aden to the Indian Ocean starting in September and continuing through November. Walrus-class submarines are among the most modern non-nuclear subs deployed by the NATO-member navies and ...

Somali Pirates Flee Al-Qaida Affiliates, Hostages in Tow

(April 27) -- With the fate of a frail country and the lives of hundreds of innocent hostages on the line, two warring Islamic groups and a band of 21st century pirates are battling for control of a remote port town on the coast of Somalia. The conflict kicked off Sunday, when a group of Islamic militants known as Al-Shabaab apparently entered the Somali pirate stronghold of Harardhere, only to retreat soon thereafter. Reports from inside the remote town suggest that the Ahlu Sunna Wal Jamma militia group, which recently signed a peace agreement with Somalia's government, has been fending off ...

Crew Says Heroic Captain Really 'a Villain'

(April 19) -- A captain hailed as a hero after being held hostage by Somali pirates for five days is now being accused by former members of his crew of endangering the ship, the New York Post reports. Last year, Richard Phillips, then the captain of a U.S.-flagged ship, the Maersk Alabama, was freed after being held captive for five days by pirates off the coast of Somalia. Phillips details that harrowing experience in a new book, "A Captain's Duty: Somali Pirates, Navy SEALs and Dangerous Days at Sea." Peter Kramer, NBC / AP Richard Phillips, former captain of the Maersk Alabama who was ...

U.S. Navy Frigate Sinks Pirate Skiff in Indian Ocean, Nabs Five Somali Suspects

A U.S. Navy warship fired back at suspected Somali pirates Thursday, sinking their skiff, capturing five of them and then commandeering a larger mothership off the coast of East Africa, the AP reported. The USS Nicholas was fired on in what appeared to be an attack on the American guided missile frigate for the sake of ransom, officials said. The U.S. Africa command said the captured pirates would remain in custody on board the ship in the Indian Ocean for the time being. The attack came just short of a year since pirates took Capt. Richard Phillips hostage after an assault on the ...

Ransom Payments Give Wing to More Somali Piracy

Ransom Payments Give Wing to More Somali Piracy

LONDON (Nov. 19) -- Claims this week that the Spanish government paid Somali pirates a $3.3 million ransom to free a Spanish fishing trawler and its crew are fueling concerns that piracy is paying off better than ever -- and that shipping costs are rising as a result. Somali pirates told The Associated Press they received that princely sum for the release of the Alakrana and its crew, which they seized in early October. Just 18 months ago, the Spanish government reportedly paid substantially less -- a reported $1.2 million -- for the release of a similar-sized fishing trawler. According to ...

As Piracy Spikes, So Do High-Tech Solutions

As Piracy Spikes, So Do High-Tech Solutions

(Nov. 18) -- When the U.S.-flagged Maersk Alabama was seized by Somali pirates in April, the ship's captain was held captive for five days, and the crew complained that all they had to defend themselves were knives. But when pirates tried to attack the cargo ship again Wednesday morning, the U.S. Navy reports, the Maersk Alabama was better prepared, thwarting the takeover with small-arms fire and some more cutting-edge weaponry. In fact, the rash of pirate attacks has spawned a cottage industry in piracy-prevention measures. Private companies are offering anti-piracy courses. And shipping ...

Caught on Twitter: Newt Gingrich Ruthlessly Exploits Somali Pirate Hostage Crisis

Newt Gingrich, among others on the right, have been callously making hay over President Obama's response to the hostage standoff with Somali pirates. I talked about this on Media Lizzy's show on Friday, explaining the most obvious thing in the world. With a US ship's captain still held captive, his life in peril, perhaps broadcasting our intentions to the world was not the brightest idea.Really, picture this:Q: Mr. President, what are you going to do about these pirates?!? Huh?!?President Obama: Well, we've got a secret rescue mission planned for tomorrow...Newt Gingrich knows this, or ought ...
