South Carolina elections

South Carolina

Minority candidates are making a splash in Palmetto State politics this year. Nikki Haley, the daughter of Sikh immigrants from India, beat several more experienced politicians to win the Republican nomination for governor. Alvin Greene, an unemployed black veteran, came out of nowhere to score a stunning primary upset and become the Democrats' nominee to challenge Republican Sen. Jim DeMint. Among congressional candidates, Tim Scott is on track to become the first black Republican elected to Congress since Oklahoma's J.C. Watts retired in 2003. McCain won South Carolina in 2008.
