Ultimately, this could turn out to be among the top 10 three-day outbreaks for number of tornadoes, though experts can't be sure until all the reports are sorted, said Greg Carbin of the federal Storm Prediction Center in Norman, Okla. While tornadoes occur regularly, their power always shocks. This time it was storms battering their way from Oklahoma to North Carolina, claiming at least 44 lives, almost half of those in North Carolina. It was ...
There are certain teachers whose influence can affect students for the rest of their lives, whose names are never forgotten. Doug Forbis hopes to become one of those -- and it's not just because he doesn't have any legs. The 24-year-old Spartanburg, S.C., man is finishing up his first year of a two-year graduate education program at Converse College. He plans to teach physical education to kids with special needs. Barcroft / Fame Born with a rare condition called sacral agenesis, Doug Forbis had his legs removed at the age of 2. He's now 24 and studying to teach ...
WELLFORD, S.C. -- Aaron Hill knew the road well, and not just because it was the route he took to high school every day. The five-mile stretch of highway was named in memory of his father, a soldier killed by a roadside bomb in Afghanistan in 2008. But on his way to class Thursday morning, the 18-year-old senior was killed when a pickup truck crossed the center line and smashed head-on into his car, authorities said. Now the Hill family - and many others in this town of nearly 2,300 - are grieving again. "It's tragic. No one should have to go through this. They've been through so much," ...
When 22-month-old Tyler Jacobson wandered off into the dark woods surrounding his South Carolina home, he was wearing only his T-shirt and a diaper. Rescuers using a bloodhound tracking team and an infrared-equipped search helicopter scoured the woods for the missing boy, but high winds and deep darkness forced them to call off their search until daylight Saturday. Kershaw County Sheriff's Office After wandering away from home, 22-month-old Tyler Jacobson made it through a cold night in the dark South Carolina woods thanks to his family dog, the local sheriff said. Thankfully, ...

Vereen must complete two years of probation or he will have to finish the five-year sentence he received in November 2009 after pleading guilty to buggery and trespassing. For anyone who doesn't recall the driver's ed section on avoiding undead life forms, you might want to steer clear of South Carolina for a few days. "Zombies Ahead," "Watch for Hunters" and "Be Alert for Tanks" are the three warnings that drivers on Lancaster County's S.C. 160 recently encountered from two seemingly tampered with electronic road signs, the Rock Hill Herald reports. The pair of highway signs, contracted through construction company CR Jackson, were intended to alert drivers of upcoming night road paving scheduled to begin March 27. COLUMBIA, S.C. -- Islam Dunn updates his Facebook page with a phone like so many other 19-year-olds, only he must hide the device so the prison guards don't notice. The proliferation of cell phones smuggled into prisons has some inmates routinely updating their status from the inside, and South Carolina is considering becoming the first state to make that a crime. The measure would add 30 days to a prisoner's sentence if he is caught interacting on social networking sites via cell phone. The bill goes a step further, too, making it illegal for anyone to set up a page for a prisoner, which ...
One told his mother not to worry about an upcoming deployment to Afghanistan. He said he would be "in a fairly safe place" just as he had been in during a previous tour in Iraq. The other was an "Army brat" enjoying his time in Germany, a place where he had spent time while growing up with his two military parents. So Senior Airman Nicholas Alden and Airman 1st Class Zachary Cuddeback obviously were well aware of the dangers of serving their country. But who could have ever predicted they would die in a shooting at Frankfurt International Airport, of all places? USAF Zachary ...

Does collective bargaining make for better or worse test scores? With Republican-controlled legislatures and state houses from Wisconsin to Oklahoma attempting to strip state workers of collective bargaining rights, figures on the combined SAT and ACT college entrance test scores in states without them are proving fodder for the ongoing debate. As republished in The Economist, a chart purporting to show that combined SAT and ACT scores in the five U.S. states without collective bargaining rights are among the worst in the country quickly became a viral hit on Twitter and Facebook. Indeed, ...
