South Dakota Governor Signs Controversial Abortion Bill

PIERRE, S.D. - South Dakota Gov. Dennis Daugaard signed a law Tuesday requiring women to wait three days after meeting with a doctor to have an abortion, the longest waiting period in the nation. Abortion rights groups have already said they plan to file a lawsuit challenging the measure, which also requires women to undergo counseling at pregnancy help centers that discourage abortions. GOP's Daugaard Leads Dems' Heidepriem in S.D. Governor Race

Republican Dennis Daugaard, South Dakota's lieutenant governor, leads Democratic state Sen. Scott Heidepriem by 49 percent to 32 percent in the race to succeed GOP Gov. Michael Rounds, who is term-limited, according to a Rasmussen Reports poll conducted March 25. Six percent prefer some other candidate and 19 percent are undecided. However, Heidepriem leads two other Republican hopefuls. South Dakota Governor Race Has No Clear Favorite in Early Going

The race to succeed South Dakota's term-limited Republican governor, Mike Rounds, has no really clear favorite at this point with about one-fifth of voters in any of three match-ups undecided, according to a Rasmussen Reports poll conducted Feb. 23 Democrat Scott Heidepriem, a state senator, runs roughly even with Republican Dave Knudson, the state Senate majority leader, and leads state Sen. Gordon Howie, but trails Lt. Gov. Dennis Daugaard. Heidepriem leads Knudson 34 percent to 31 percent with 13 percent preferring another candidate and 22 percent undecided.
