Carter, Former World Leaders in N. Korea for Talks

PYONGYANG, North Korea - Former President Jimmy Carter and other past world leaders were hoping to meet with North Korea's ruler as they began a three-day mission Tuesday to discuss dangerous food shortages and stalled nuclear disarmament talks. Children presented flowers to Carter, former Finnish President Martti Ahtisaari, former Norwegian Prime Minister Gro Brundtland and former Irish President Mary Robinson at the airport, and the group was greeted by Vice Foreign Minister Ri Yong Ho, according to Associated Press Television News in Pyongyang. The former leaders didn't know ahead of ...

Huge Pumps From US to Help in Japan Nuclear Crisis

ATLANTA -- Two gigantic concrete pumps - described as the largest such equipment in the world - will soon be on their way to join the machinery being used to pour water on damaged reactors in Japan's nuclear crisis, company officials said Thursday. The two machines are normally used to spray concrete for new skyscrapers, bridges and other massive construction projects. The machines are now being retrofitted in North Charleston, S.C., and Sante Fe Springs, Calif. That will allow them to spray water instead of concrete on the nuclear reactors, said Kelly Blickle, a spokeswoman at Putzmeister ...

30 International Rescue Teams Mobilized for 'Terrified' Japan

As the world watched horrifying images of a giant wave washing over northeastern Japan like a sledgehammer from the sea, the U.N. said that rescue teams from at least 30 countries were poised to help with the fallout from today's 8.9 earthquake. Unconfirmed reports now say that hundreds have been killed or injured in one of the worst earthquakes ever recorded. Those numbers are expected to grow. Four million homes around Tokyo alone were without electricity. Aerial images showed a dark wall of water, reportedly 32-feet high, hurtling across Japan, swallowing cars, boats and buildings as if ...

North Korea Threatens to Attack South, US

SEOUL, South Korea -- North Korea threatened Sunday to enlarge its nuclear arsenal and mercilessly attack South Korea and the United States, as the allies prepared to start annual joint military drills which the North says are a rehearsal for an invasion. North Korea routinely issues similar threats against South Korea and the U.S. over any joint military drills. The latest warning, however, could rekindle tensions on the Korean peninsula which sharply rose last year after two deadly incidents blamed on the North. North Korea fired artillery at a front-line South Korean island in November, ...

Balloons From South Korea Inform North of Middle East Uprisings

Balloons From South Korea Inform North of Middle East Uprisings

South Korea is sending balloon messages into North Korean airspace about the anti-government protests in the Middle East, ramping up the psychological warfare against Kim Jong Il's infamously hermetic regime. The balloons tell of the popular uprisings in Egypt and Libya half a world away from the Korean Peninsula and encourage citizens in North Korea to revolt, Korean lawmakers told The Korea Times. Lee Jin-man, AP South Korean activists and former North Korean defectors released balloons on Feb. 16 with leaflets condemning North Korean leader Kim Jong Il. South Korea is now ...

Egypt Revolt Becomes Global Case Study

CAIRO - It seems naive to hope the fallout from cataclysmic events in the Middle East and North Africa can spill beyond the region and stir distant, repressed populations with no cultural or historical affinity. Yet successful uprisings in Egypt and Tunisia have captivated dissidents and activists around the world who have campaigned in vain for radical change, in some cases for decades. This week, South Korean activists even hoisted helium balloons into the air and watched them drift into North Korea with a message attached: discard your leaders, just as the Egyptians did. "The Egyptian ...

North, South Korea Talk at DMZ to Ease Tensions

SEOUL, South Korea -- Military officers from North and South Korea held talks inside the heavily guarded Demilitarized Zone on Tuesday in the rivals' first official dialogue since the North's deadly artillery barrage of a South Korean island in November. Tensions on the divided peninsula rose sharply following the attack, which killed four people and came just eight months after the sinking of a South Korean warship killed 46 sailors. The South has blamed the sinking on a North Korean torpedo attack, but Pyongyang has steadfastly denied involvement. Colonels from the two Koreas met Tuesday ...

South Korea: North Korea Wants Defense Talks Held Earlier

SEOUL, South Korea -- South Korea says the North has pushed for rare defense talks between the rivals to be held sooner than the South proposes. South Korea agreed last week to talks on easing hostility on the Korean peninsula. The Defense Ministry said in a statement Monday that North Korea wants a preliminary meeting on Tuesday to prepare for higher-level defense talks. But the ministry repeated that the South wanted the preliminary talks to take place Feb. 11. The talks are aimed at easing tensions after North Korea's artillery bombardment of a South Korean island in November and the ...

South Korean Commandos Rescue Crew From Somali Pirates

In a daring high-seas rescue, South Korean navy commandos today stormed a freighter that's been held hostage for a week in the Arabian Sea, killing eight Somali pirates and freeing 21 crew members. Five other pirates were captured. The ship's captain was shot in the stomach by the pirates, but he's expected to survive, South Korea said. "Our special forces stormed the hijacked Samho Jewelry earlier today and freed all hostages," Colonel Lee Bung-woo, a spokesman for South Korea's joint chiefs of staff, told The Guardian and other reporters in Seoul. "During the operation, our forces killed ...
