Dead Candidate Re-Elected in California

(Nov. 3) -- A Democratic state senator who died last month was easily re-elected in California, denying the GOP the seat and probably forcing the governor to call a special election. Sen. Jenny Oropeza was leading Republican challenger John Stammreich 58.4 percent to 35.7 percent, according to the latest vote count, The Sacramento Bee reported. dist28.casen.govoffice.com California state Sen. Jenny Oropeza, who died Oct. 20, was re-elected Tuesday. Her name was on the ballot because she died so close to the election. If the results hold up, Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger will call a special ...

West Virginia to Hold Special Election to Replace Sen. Robert Byrd

West Virginia can hold a special election this year to fill the Senate seat left empty by the death of Robert Byrd, the state's attorney general decided Thursday. Gov. Joe Manchin III said he would "speak with the state's legislative leadership immediately to determine how we will further proceed in order to reach a conclusion to this matter," The New York Times reported. Manchin has said he would prefer a special election instead of filling the remaining two years of Byrd's term with an appointee. The governor (pictured) will appoint someone to hold the seat until November, when the vote ...

Mark Critz Sworn In To Replace John Murtha: 'It's Very Surreal'

Two days after he cruised to an eight percentage point victory over his Republican opponent, Rep. Mark Critz (D-Pa.) picked up the keys to his old boss' Capitol Hill office. Critz was a longtime staffer to the late Rep. Jack Murtha, who died suddenly in February after gallbladder surgery. Critz called his first day in Washington "surreal." He won a special election on Tuesday to fill the seat. "He was my hero, so it's very emotional," Critz said. "But I just kept the focus on what Mr. Murtha would have done." On Tuesday night, the newest congressman provided Democrats with their first shot ...

Pennsylvania Special Election Could Signal Midterm Results

Pennsylvania Special Election Could Signal Midterm Results

Republicans seem to have the wind at their backs nationally, but will it translate into a win in Pennsylvania to fill the seat left open by the death of Democrat John Murtha? Mark Critz, a former Murtha aide, and Tim Burns, a Republican businessman, are competing for the job Murtha held from 1974, when he narrowly won a special election, until last February. Recent polls show the race is neck and neck. As is always the case with special elections, turnout is what matters, and it's hard to predict turnout in the 12th Congressional District, where voters had been electing Murtha for ...

Pennsylvania Must Hold Special Election to Replace John Murtha

Pennsylvania Must Hold Special Election to Replace John Murtha

According to state law, Pennsylvania must hold a special election to replace the late Rep. John Murtha, Politico reports. After Murtha's vacancy has been officially declared, Gov. Ed Rendell has 10 days to call a special election, which can take place no more than 60 days later. The likely date is May 18, the day the state's regularly scheduled primary elections will be held. There will be no primary to select candidates for the special election. County party leaders from Murtha's western Pennsylvania district will select candidates at a convention, and the winner of the special election will ...

What Gordon Brown Can Learn From Massachusetts and Chile

What Gordon Brown Can Learn From Massachusetts and Chile

If British Prime Minister Gordon Brown didn't watch CNN International last week, let's hope that one of his staffers did. Two landmark elections in Chile and Massachusetts delivered stunning victories for right-wing political parties. And in my humble opinion, both elections have portentous implications for the upcoming elections in the U.K. ...

Wild Cards Abound on Tense Election Day in Mass.

(Jan. 19) – The polls say Republican Scott Brown woke up this morning with the advantage over Democrat Martha Coakley in today's Massachusetts special Senate election, but polling experts also say that the combination of the unusual January date and the crush of interest and special-interest money in the late stages of the contest makes the outcome especially susceptible to day-of plot twists. Here are six factors that could shape tonight's returns, along with intel on how they're trending with a few hours to go before the polls close. The Weather: Nasty precipitation is turning the ...

GOP Looks to Begin Comeback in New York Special Election

Both national parties will be looking at the results in a rural New York House district special election taking place today for a glimpse at what may happen in the 2010 Congressional elections. But for the Republican Party, the stakes are especially high. Voters in New York's 20th Congressional district will choose a replacement for former Representative Kirsten Gillibrand (D), who was selected by New York Governor David Patterson (D) to fill the Senate seat vacated by Secretary of State Hillary Clinton (D). Democrat Scott Murphy is vying to hold the seat for the Democrats against a strong ...

Black Pastors: Burris Must Go

APNewsBreak:A group of black ministers who supported U.S. Sen. Roland Burris as he fought to get his job now plan to ask for his resignation following revelations that he tried to raise money for the disgraced governor who appointed him, one of the ministers told The Associated Press on Thursday. Many of the city's influential black pastors supported Burris because of his scandal-free reputation-even though he was appointed by then-Gov. With Guidance from Washington, Illinois Democrats Delay Decisions on Governor's Future

Democrats in the Illinois legislature have moved slowly to remove disgraced governor Rod Blagojevich from office, managing to convene an impeacement panel but hearing no evidence. Meanwhile, both the Illinois Senate and House of Representatives put off votes on holding a special election to choose a replacement for President-elect Barack Obama in the United States Senate. The lack of action on the part of the legislature leaves the incredible possibility that Blagojevich, who is under indictment for, among other things, conspiring to sell an appointment to the Senate seat to the highest ...
