Vikings' Starting QB Still Unknown for Outdoor Monday Night Game

Vikings' Starting QB Still Unknown for Outdoor Monday Night Game

The Minnesota Vikings know where they'll be playing Monday night's home finale against the Chicago Bears. Now they need to figure out who their quarterback is. With the snow-damaged Metrodome roof unable to be repaired in time, the Vikings have announced that they'll play at the University of Minnesota's outdoor stadium instead. That could result in one of the coldest games in NFL history Monday night, and it will also make the Vikings, along with the 2005 New Orleans Saints, one of just two teams in recent NFL history to play "home" games at three different NFL stadiums. "We have been in ...

Brett Favre Inactive Against Giants, Ending Streak of 297 Straight Starts

Brett Favre Inactive Against Giants, Ending Streak of 297 Straight Starts

Brett Favre did not start Monday night for the Minnesota Vikings against the New York Giants, bringing to an end his NFL-record streak for consecutive starts at 297 games. Favre was added to the inactive list about an hour and a half prior to kickoff. Favre owns the NFL record for passing yards, passing touchdowns and complete passes, and yet the streak is the most impressive of all his records. The streak began in September of 1992, when Favre replaced an injured Don Majkowski as the Green Bay Packers' starter. It has endured through injuries to Favre's throwing arm and hand, his injured ...

Tarvaris Jackson Says Brett Favre Will Play His '15,001st' Straight Game

Last Sunday, after Vikings quarterback Brett Favre got hurt on his first pass, backup Tarvaris Jackson got his most extensive playing time since Favre arrived in Minnesota last year. But Jackson isn't expecting to get much playing time this Sunday. "He's played 15,000 straight games now," Jackson said. "So, probably 15,001 next week." Actually, Jackson is off by 14,703: Favre's streak is at 297 straight games. But Jackson was in elementary school the last time Favre didn't start a game, so it's not surprising that he doesn't know the exact number. Although Favre appeared to have suffered a ...

Brett Favre's MRI Reveals Shoulder Sprain; QB Expected to Start in Week 14

Brett Favre threw just one pass on Sunday before leaving the game with a shoulder injury. But after medical testing Monday, all indications are that his shoulder will be healthy enough for him to get back on the field this week. Vikings coach Leslie Frazier told reporters Monday that an MRI revealed that Favre has a sprained sternoclavicular joint in his throwing shoulder. When asked if he expects Favre to play this week, Frazier said, "No question." So, Favre should be on the field when the Vikings host the Giants, in what will be his 298th consecutive start. In fact, Favre briefly talked ...

Brett Favre Injury Saga Won't Go Away

Brett Favre Injury Saga Won't Go Away

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. -- As the cart rolled toward the Gillette Stadium tunnel, Brett Favre was stretched out and tended to by trainers. It wasn't his elbow this time. Not the fractures in his his foot or heel, either. No, it was a nasty, bloody gash to his a chin, courtesy of a New England defensive end Myron Pryor. Something that happens every Sunday of the NFL season happened to Brett Favre for the first time in 20 years playing this game. It was so historic, momentous and emotional that Patriots fans actually booed the battered quarterback as he was taken away. That's when a moment of ...

Brad Childress Lectures the Media: Stop Asking About Backup QBs

Brad Childress Lectures the Media: Stop Asking About Backup QBs

I wrote a couple days ago that the Minnesota Vikings made a mistake when they traded away backup quarterback Sage Rosenfels. I'm not the only one who feels that way. In fact, Vikings coach Brad Childress has heard from so many members of the media asking so many questions about the decision to trade Rosenfels and make Tarvaris Jackson and rookie Joe Webb the backups behind Brett Favre that he lashed out at reporters who asked him about the subject again on Sunday. "I'm not going to deal in hypotheticals," Childress said when a reporter asked him what might happen if both Favre and Jackson ...

Vikings Made Mistake Trading Backup Sage Rosenfels

Vikings Made Mistake Trading Backup Sage Rosenfels

Since the day he became a starting quarterback in 1992, Brett Favre has never missed a game. Maybe that's why the Minnesota Vikings felt comfortable trading away their best backup quarterback. But just because Favre has never missed a game doesn't mean he never will. He has a bad ankle, he turns 41 this season, and no one -- not even Favre -- is unbreakable. And if Favre does get hurt, the Vikings will regret trading Sage Rosenfels to the Giants. By trading Rosenfels, the Vikings declared that Tarvaris Jackson is the man they trust to start if Favre goes down -- and the man they'll trust as ...

Report: Brett Favre Says He Will Return to Vikings if Healthy

Report: Brett Favre Says He Will Return to Vikings if Healthy

Those eternally waiting on Brett Favre learned something Wednesday, a concrete bit of intelligence -- if he is healthy, the veteran quarterback will return to the Minnesota Vikings. Favre admitted as much to ESPN while sitting in his truck, holding court from the driver's seat above the hum of his grumbling diesel engine. He had just finished volunteering as a coach at a Hattiesburg, Miss., high school. "Oh, if I'm healthy, sure," Favre told ESPN when asked if he would return if given a solid bill of health. Unfortunately for those hoping his indecision will end, it's unclear whether he is ...

NFL Notebook, July 12: Brett Favre Working Out at High School Again

Here's what's happening around the National Football League on Monday, July 12, 2010: • Just like last offseason, as he danced around the issue of returning to the NFL, not to mention four summers before that, Brett Favre has begun working out with Oak Grove High School's football team in Hattiesburg, Miss. And according to the Associated Press, Favre is "getting along just fine" on his surgically repaired left ankle. At this point, the veteran QB's return for a 20th season seems inevitable. "He ain't working out for no reason," said Vikings quarterback Tarvaris Jackson, the starter ...

Brett Favre Reportedly Needs Ankle Surgery to Play in 2010

Brett Favre Reportedly Needs Ankle Surgery to Play in 2010

Brett Favre playing out the spring string of "will he/won't he" is as predictable as pollen, taxes and Bud Selig doing something irrational to make America hate baseball. Not predictable? Favre requiring ankle surgery to play for the Minnesota Vikings next year. That's the word from ESPN's Ed Werder and, more importantly, from the dreaded Dr. James Andrews, who informed the Vikes' incumbent quarterback of the news recently. Favre's need for ankle surgery comes at a pretty unfortunate time: the NFL Draft was last weekend, and because there wasn't a pressing need for a quarterback, Minnesota ...
