A century and a half after the opening shots of the U.S. Civil War, nearly four in 10 Southerners say they still sympathize with the Confederacy. That's according to a new CNN poll released on the 150th anniversary of the start of the Civil War, when Union soldiers raised a U.S. flag over Fort Sumter in South Carolina and the opening shots of the war rang out. The poll's results reveal that the war that divided the nation for four years still divides American public opinion today. In the South, 38 percent of respondents said they sympathize with the Confederacy, which lost the bloody war. ...
Republican Sharron Angle kicked off her campaign for one of Nevada's four U.S. House seats on Wednesday with a video of her at a kitchen table, announcing, "I am most concerned about the enormous debt that we're passing along to our children and grandchildren." Watch video here: Angle, a tea party superstar who lost by five percentage points to Democrat Harry Reid in a bid for his Senate seat last November, is a divisive figure in her own party. Here's how Politico characterized her entrance into the 2012 House race, under the headline, "GOP Braces for Angle's Encore Run": "She's back ...
WASHINGTON -- Conservative Republicans on Capitol Hill began Monday to come out against a measure to keep the government running for three more weeks while the White House and Republican lawmakers seek a longer-term agreement on spending cuts. Rep. Jim Jordan, R-Ohio, who chairs the Republican Study Committee, which makes up a sizable majority of House Republicans, said the measure should include a ban on federal funding for Planned Parenthood and that Congress needs to do better than cutting spending a few billion dollars at a time. Jordan's opposition reflects widespread unhappiness among ...
Sarah Palin talks a lot about the tea party. On Fox News last week, she said, "I find inspiration in tea party patriots [and] those with common sense who aren't playing a lot of games." She could be considered the tea party's godmother. With her Sarah PAC and support for 2010 tea party candidates, Palin has generated a lot of good will, not to mention publicity, for a movement that began only two years ago. She also isn't afraid to attack popular Republicans such as New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie. Related Stories Sarah Palin's India Trip: Bill Clinton, Nelson Mandela ...
WASHINGTON -- Republicans set on eliminating taxpayer funding of public broadcasting would be hard-pressed to write a better script than the recent comedy of errors that reached a dramatic climax today with NPR CEO Vivian Schiller's resignation. The public radio network survived efforts by conservative lawmakers in 1995 and 2005 to cut funding for what they have charged is an elitist mouthpiece for the left. But in the wake of a video sting by a right-wing provocateur that fit perfectly into that image, and in the midst of a debate on Capitol Hill to shrink the federal deficit, NPR's future ...
Smile for the camera. Soon-to-be-departing NPR executive Ron Schiller is the latest victim of hidden-camera wielding conservative activist James O'Keefe. Schiller, who thought he was sitting down with two Muslim philanthropists and potential donors, was caught on film making choice statements, including "tea party people" are "seriously racist, racist people," and NPR "would be better off in the long run without federal funding," a statement directly opposing the organization's official position. You can watch the video, here: Schiller was actually planning his departure from NPR ...
Stop that train! The Florida Supreme Court has slammed the brakes on opposition to Gov. Rick Scott's decision to reject $2.4 billion in federal high-speed rail funding. The court dismissed a bipartisan petition submitted by two state senators claiming that Scott overstepped his power by passing on the stimulus project. "The governor is gratified that the court provided a clear and unanimous decision. He is now focused on moving forward with infrastructure projects that create long-term jobs and turn Florida's economy around," Scott spokesman Brian Burgess said in a statement. Why is Scott ...
The political long shot for 2012 – Herman Cain – is already a winner. Cain, who is the first of the 2012 candidates to form a presidential exploratory committee, won the American Policy Summit's presidential live straw poll on Sunday held by the Tea Party Patriots conference in Phoenix. On Twitter, Cain wrote: "Honored to learn that I won the Tea Party Patriots' presidential straw poll. Thanks for your support!" According to the Cain camp, out of 14 options on the ballot and 1,600 votes, Cain came in first with 22 percent in the straw poll. Former Gov. Tim Pawlenty of Minnesota ...
LITTLE ROCK, Ark. -- When Herman Cain walks into a tea party event, he is greeted like a rock star. "It's him, it's him," spreads across the meeting room. And so it was here on Thursday. When people approached him, they acted like they knew him. They mentioned his Atlanta radio show. They asked about his book, "They Think You're Stupid." They told him they are curious about his possible 2012 presidential run.
