Opinion: A Modest Proposal for Anti-Government Crowd

(April 19) -- Anger with government is the theme on the right these days, with anguished cries by tea partiers, militia members and other government haters of "We're taking our country back." This is quite amusing, as it would be curious to find out: From whom do they think they are recapturing "their" country? And what are they going to do with it when they get it? (Well, we know the answer to that: The last time they had it, they ruined it.) It would seem the only group who has the right to say they're taking the country back would be Native Americans. After all, it was Whitey who stole it ...

'Contract From America' Unveiled at DC Tea Party

WASHINGTON (April 15) -- For the second year running, Tax Day brought a surge of grass-roots energy to the nation's capital, as thousands of tea party faithful descended on the city today for a day of protests, rallies and activism led by conservative and tea party notables. Addressing a raucous crowd in Freedom Plaza, former GOP Majority Leader and conservative activist Dick Armey said, "There's only one legitimate reason to levy a tax: to raise money. And when you do that, you should raise no more money than is absolutely necessary." Advocating a tax reform plan called the Fair Tax, Sen. ...

Sarah Palin Sticks to Her Guns, and Gun Imagery, in Message to Supporters

In a message posted on her Facebook page Sunday afternoon, Sarah Palin reiterated her call for supporters to "reload" in the battle against health care reform, a term that provoked controversy last week after critics accused her of inciting violence against members of Congress. Presenting her message as an exhortation to college basketball teams competing in March Madness, Palin stood her ground in using firearm imagery against the administration. "The crossfire is intense, so penetrate through enemy territory by bombing through the press, and use your strong weapons -- your Big Guns -- to ...

Health Care Debate Enters Final Stage

WASHINGTON (March 15) -- Declaring that "every proposal has been put on the table, every argument has been made," President Barack Obama made a last-ditch appeal Monday for his health care reform plan as Democratic leaders huddled behind closed doors here to ferret out enough ayes for a vote later this week. In a rally at a senior center in Strongsville, Ohio, Obama addressed those over 65 directly in words meant not only to reassure seniors that health care reform won't come at their expense but also to counter Republican claims that Democrats mean to gut Medicare to subsidize health ...

Marvel Comics Apologizes for Offending Tea Partiers in 'Captain America' Story

Marvel Comics' "Captain America" -- about a superpatriot who fought Nazis in World War II and chased flag burners during the Vietnam War -- is one of the longest-running, best-loved comics in American history. But, Marvel recently apologized for having a story align too closely to the politics of the moment, Yahoo News reports. While infiltrating a right-wing, anti-government militia group known as the "Watchdogs," Captain America encounters mobs of what appear to be Tea Party protesters. In one scene, Captain America and his African-American sidekick, The Falcon, observe an anti-tax protest ...

Rasmussen Poll: Tea Party Beats GOP on Generic Three-Way Ballot

Rasmussen Poll: Tea Party Beats GOP on Generic Three-Way Ballot

More Americans would vote for a "Tea Party" candidate than a Republican, according to a Rasmussen poll released Monday that quizzed voters on a hypothetical three-way ballot. Respondents were asked to assume that the "Tea Party" was an organized new party, despite the fact that it is highly unlikely the grassroots conservative movement that has gained momentum this year will become a third party.A majority of Americans said they would vote Democratic (36 percent), while the number who said they would vote "Tea Party" (23 percent) slightly edged out Republican voters (18 percent). Another 22 ...
