Click here to visit the new home of Politics Daily!National and local headlines have been dominated recently by stories about labor disputes and controversial education reforms. But what exactly is at stake in those battles is somewhat murky. News reports are bogged down with eye-glazing terminology such as "collective bargaining" and "binding arbitration" -- not necessarily phrases that would incite most people to join 85,000 protesters camped out around the Wisconsin state house. In an effort to clarify the debates gripping the nation this year, we have written a pocket-sized primer on some of those ugly terms. Print it out, carry it in ...
For the past two weeks, the news media have been swarming over Madison, Wis., covering every detail of the public-sector union protests against Gov. Scott Walker's proposed budget cuts, as well as other similar protests around the country. If you've followed the mainstream press, you've seen lots of civil protests, lots of interviews with reasonable teachers, pictures of signs about the need for quality education. But have they been giving viewers and readers the whole story? Not quite. Here's a sampling of what you likely missed: Scott Olson, Getty Images A protester holds a ...
(Sept. 6) -- On Labor Day, union leaders must ask themselves if the unions' future could possibly be darker. Of course, union leaders will make their usual speeches about fighting the good fight for working families, but I predict there will be fear and uncertainty in their voices. For they know that America's unions are adrift in a sea of woes, which has become so apparent to me, a professor of labor relations who has taught collective bargaining courses at Clark University for more than 20 years. Unemployment blues: Unions are feeling the full brunt of massive unemployment. Union jobs are ...
(July 14) -- "Your child's safety is at risk!" blares a poster depicting a terrified child, mouth ominously covered by a huge hand. Paid for by the Sacramento County, Calif., sheriffs union, it warns residents that if layoffs occur, they could "put your family at risk." A blood-smeared billboard, paid for by the Stockton, Calif., police union, echoes the point: "Welcome to the 2nd most dangerous city in California. Stop laying off cops." www.servicewithconcern.com This campaign by the Sacramento County, Calif., sheriffs union warns of the risk of police layoffs. Teachers have their own ...
(June 29) -- New York City's schools are quiet for the next several weeks as more than 1 million students take summer break. But while children are at home, parents wonder if and when K-12 education will ever turn around in the nation's largest school district. At least with New York City schools Chancellor Joel Klein, parents and children have a chance. Another View No school is improved and no student is helped by closing schools, says Diane Ravitch, former assistant secretary of Education. Find out why she thinks this is. This past school year, Klein made the bold move of announcing he ...
The new documentary, "Waiting for Superman," is the work of Davis Guggenheim, who also directed "An Inconvenient Truth." But his new movie, on the subject of school reform, takes on the teacher's union so pointedly that he practically cues the music from "Jaws" every time the union is mentioned -- and makes it look like the only obstacle to public school excellence is the ability to fire teachers with impunity. Davis isn't alone in this view, either; on the contrary, it's become the new conventional wisdom among liberals. When did we put the American Federation of Teachers on par with Al ...
Democrats have included a provision in the $410 billion omnibus spending bill currently winding its way through Congress that would end the D.C. Opportunity Scholarships program. The program provides $7,500 vouchers to some 1,700 low-income families in the nation's capital that can be used to help pay the cost of tuition at private schools. The program allows thousands of D.C. kids the chance to escape the District's crowded, unsafe, and underperforming school system for a quality education. If the bill passes in its current form, those vouchers will dry up, leaving many of the recipients with ...
