Click here to visit the new home of Politics Daily!Satirical newspaper The Onion once mocked the myriad conspiracy theories surrounding President John F. Kennedy's death with the headline "Kennedy Slain by CIA, Mafia, Castro, LBJ, Teamsters, Freemasons." Merits of these assassination theories aside, it's clear that the conspiracy mindset was ingrained in the American psyche soon after the 1963 shooting in Dallas. Information from Ted Kennedy's FBI files, just released today, will do little to dispel that mindset, making numerous references to Mafia conspiracies to kill members of the Kennedy family, including Ted. Most of the information ...
(April 12) -- What secrets still remain about one of America's most famous public figures? Before the FBI releases 3,000 pages of its file on Massachusetts Sen. Ted Kennedy, the family of the late political icon will have a chance to review them and make its case to keep some portions from being made public. The release of this first installment of Kennedy's file comes in response to several Freedom of Information Act requests made following the senator's death from brain cancer in 2009 at the age of 77. Chip Somodevilla, Getty Images Ted Kennedy's family will have the opportunity to ...
(March 21) Below is the transcript of House Speaker Nancy Pelosi's remarks before the House voted on health care reform. Thank you, my colleagues. Thank you, Mr. Speaker. I thank the gentleman for yielding. I thank all of you for bringing us to this moment. It is with great humility and with great pride that we tonight will make history for our country and progress for the American people. Just think -- we will be joining those who established Social Security, Medicare, and now tonight health care for all Americans. In doing so, we will honor the vows of our founders, who in the ...
BOSTON -- The last time a Republican was elected to fill a Massachusetts seat in the U.S. Senate, Barack Obama was still Barry. It was 1972 when Ed Brooke was re-elected, and the future 44th president of the United States was just 11 years old. Ted Kennedy, of course, had already been a senator for a decade when Brooke was elected. Kennedy's nearly five-decade reign makes it easy to believe that there has never been life without the so-called Lion of the Senate representing Massachusetts. The months since Kennedy's August death excepted, for a staggering 59.8 percent of Massachusettians -- ...
(Jan. 20) -- At first glance, it's quite clear who's the biggest winner in Tuesday's Massachusetts election. State Sen. Scott Brown has become the GOP's latest hero by capturing the U.S. Senate seat Democrats held for decades. And not just any Democrats -- the Kennedys. Brown's victory over state Attorney General Martha Coakley -- Tuesday's biggest loser -- in the battle to succeed Ted Kennedy might spell defeat for health care reform, which the late senator called the cause of his life. A closer look at what online commentators are saying about the election that ended the Democrats' 60-vote ...
(Jan. 19) – "History is written by the victors," Winston Churchill famously said. In Texas, that may mean removing mention of Ted Kennedy and Cesar Chavez from textbooks in favor of new entries on the National Rifle Association and Phyllis Schlafly. For much of the past year, the Texas State Board of Education has been considering changes to its social studies curriculum, hearing from community members and debating alterations to the way the state will teach history. Jack Plunkett, AP "I don't see any evidence that people are pursuing any political or personal agendas," Gail Lowe, ...
Republican Scott Brown leads Democrat Martha Coakley 51 percent to 46 percent with 4 percent undecided in a tight race to fill the seat of the late Sen. Edward Kennedy that will be decided in a Tuesday special election, according to a Public Policy Polling survey conducted Jan. 16-17. The margin of error is 2.8 points and PPP says "other factors, such as refusal to be interviewed and weighting, may introduce additional error that is more difficult to quantify." ...
This year saw the deaths of artists and athletes, politicians and pioneers, the seemingly ordinary and the obviously extraordinary. The deaths were sometimes expected, like the loss of the world's oldest woman. But often, they were so sudden and stunning, like the death of superstar Michael Jackson, they seemed to take our breath away. There's a common thread for the passings noted here: The lives and deaths of these individuals were felt far beyond their circle of family and friends, a testament to their influence and their simple ability to stand out in the crowd. In looking over the deaths ...
President Obama has appointed Victoria Reggie Kennedy, the widow of the late Sen. Ted Kennedy, to the board of the Kennedy Center in Washington. The Kennedy Center's board of trustees currently includes all of the living first ladies and former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, among others. The president and Michelle Obama held a reception on Sunday ahead of the 32nd Kennedy Center Honors, at which Robert De Niro, Bruce Springsteen, Mel Brooks, Dave Brubeck and opera singer Grace Bumbry received awards. Vicki Kennedy has recently talked about her husband's death in August, revealing that ...
Google on Tuesday released the top searches within the United States for 2009; the results are surprising and interesting. The top Google searches for senators show that people are more interested in reading about Democrats than Republicans -- only Chuck Grassley of Iowa at No. 9 made the list for the GOP. And it also shows that people are doing more searches for senators with key roles in legislation than for senators caught up in scandals. No surprise, Ted Kennedy tops the Senate Google searches, as he died this year. Second on the Senate list is Nelson, but the Google people don't tell us ...
