Washington in 60 Seconds: Congress Plans to Campaign Now, Govern Later

Good morning, Capitolists! It's a busy day in Washington, but in the words of motivational speaker turned Vice President Joe Biden, "Stop whining!" And start reading about what's happening in the nation's capital, in the next 60 seconds. - Stuffing the Duck. Congress is back in business this week, but there won't be much business getting taken care of. Look for two votes each in the House and Senate before members head for the exits until after the November elections. That means they'll leave a lengthy to-do list for the seasonally plucked and stuffed lame duck session that will include (at ...

Former Sen. Ted Stevens Killed in Alaska Plane Crash

Former U.S. Sen. Ted Stevens, the longest serving Republican senator in history, died in a plane crash in Alaska, a Stevens family spokesman has confirmed to the Associated Press. Stevens represented Alaska in the Senate from 1968 to 2009. He was 86. Stevens was one of nine people aboard a single-engine plane that went down near Dillingham, Alaska, Monday night. Former NASA administrator Sean O'Keefe was also on the flight. O'Keefe once served as secretary of the Navy under President George H.W. Bush and worked as a staff member on Stevens' Senate Appropriations Committee for eight years. In ...

Egyptian Government, Egyptian Pig Farmers Square Off Over Swine Flu

We previously reported in this space that the Egyptian government has ordered the slaughter of the nation's herd of 300,000 pigs to stem the surge of swine flu that never existed to begin with. And while the Egyptian pigs have been taking the news of their death sentences with utmost diplomatic grace, the farmers that own them have been somewhat less cooperative...Egyptian police and armored cars charged into a crowd of a 1,000 irate pig farmers armed with stones and bottles, leaving 12 people injured as residents of a Cairo slum resisted government efforts to slaughter the nation's pigs to ...

New Transcripts Reveal Ted Stevens Turned Down Plea Agreement

Newly released transcripts of bench conferences in the Ted Stevens case reveal that the former Alaska Senator turned down a plea agreement that would have avoided a trial or jail time:With prosecutors and defense attorneys gathered in front of him at the bench, Sullivan asked Justice Department attorney Brenda Morris whether the prosecution had offered a plea deal or planned to do so. Stevens attorney Brendan Sullivan interjected that there was a plea offer, but that Morris probably wasn't aware of it because she wasn't present when it was made. Brendan Sullivan said the offer was for Stevens ...

Palin Picks a 'Democrat' for Vacant Senate Post

Palin Picks a 'Democrat' for Vacant Senate Post

In what has to be the greatest display of Alaska bipartisanship since Ted Stevens (R) and Mike Gravel (D) made a pact to both become blathering, demented loons at the same time, Governor Sarah Palin has appointed a Democrat to fill a vacant seat in the Alaska Senate. The good feelings end there, for the following reasons:1. State law required Palin to pick a Democrat.2. The Alaska Democratic Party asked her to select state House Minority Leader Beth Kerttula. They did not suggest any other nominees.3. Instead of Kerttula, Palin picked Tim Grussendorf, who, according to the Anchorage Daily News, ...

British Protester Slimes Lord Mandelson

British Protester Slimes Lord Mandelson

Let's face it America. With Ted Stevens gone, our nation's political decorum has become pretty staid.Thankfully we have dear old Britain to keep us entertained, and they did their part today when an environmental activist slimed Lord Mandelson, the nation's Secretary of State for Business. The activist, representing a group called Plane Stupid, is angry with Lord Mandelson for supporting a new runway at London's Heathrow Airport. They also apparently resent the cancellation of Double Dare. And here's something that could never happen in America: The girl walked away from the scene scot-free! ...

Corruptocrat of the Year 2008

By  Caleb Howe - Politics Daily
Corruptocrat of the Year 2008

The theme of the day today is "Blank of the Year" following Time's selection of Barack Obama as their person of the year. Another big theme recently is corruption, as we witness one of the most grotesque corruption scandals in history erupting in the same political cauldron that birthed the President-elect. But Chicago politics are not limited to Chicago politicians. So who is the worst? What's the worst political scandal of 2008? Not just regular old scandals like Tusla or Macaca, no, we're talking about real corruption here. You've heard of autocrats, plutocrats, bureaucrats, technocrats, ...

Ted Stevens Going Down in Defeat, Disgrace

Ted Stevens Going Down in Defeat, Disgrace

Math superstar Nate Silver has been looking over the latest numbers from up north and has now called the Alaska Senate race in Democratic challenger Mark Begich's favor:With 14,626 of the roughly 24,000 ballots left to count today, Beigich's lead over Republican Ted Stevens is now 2,374. The remaining results are expected to arrive later this afternoon. Stevens would have to win by a margin of ov over 25% of the outstanding ballots to tie Begich. And that, says Silver, ain't gonna happen. It has been a rocky political end for Stevens, the GOP's longest-serving senator. First he became ...

Ted Stevens Falls Behind in Senate Race

Ted Stevens Falls Behind in Senate Race

According to the latest unofficial count from the Anchorage Daily News, Democrat Mark Begich has pulled ahead of convicted felon Ted Stevens in the Alaska Senate race. By three votes.Interestingly, there were 670 write-in votes cast in the race, meaning that each candidate can now kick himself for not courting the endorsements of, respectively, Mike Hunt, Richard Hertz, and Haywood D'Jableaumee. As Caleb Howe reported earlier, at length, things are looking up in Minnesota for Democrat Al Franken. As Ben Smith points out, success there and in the December 12 Georgia runoff (the election, not the ...

Is Alaska the New Florida?

By  David Knowles - Politics Daily
Is Alaska the New Florida?

By any measure, Alaska is a red state. Since its star was added to our flag back in 1959, the place has only voted Democrat for president once, in '64. While much of the country seemed to turn a bluer hue in this year's election, Alaska held its ground, and gave McCain/Palin a nearly identical margin of victory (62%-36%) as it had to George Bush vs. John Kerry. Despite seeming constancy from points north, there are more than a few peculiarities to what went down in the tundra in '08. Via ABC's Rick Klein:Election officials in Alaska were preparing for record-breaking turnout on Tuesday, with ...
