Is abstinence the new normal? The teen pregnancy rate hit a record low in 2009, according to new data just released by the National Center for Health Statistics. The birth rate last year fell to 39.1 births per 1,000 teens, a decrease of 6 percent from 2008. What's keeping America's teens childless? Surge Desk takes a look at a few of the competing explanations. No one's having babies at any age American teens could just be emulating their older role models; hardly anyone had babies in 2009. Birth rates also fell for women in their early 20s and for women in their late 20s and early ...
(Nov. 17) -- Bristol Palin doesn't need any condoms. So when The Situation from MTV's "Jersey Shore" pulled out a long stack of Magnum brand rubbers and offered one to her, the teen mom and abstinence advocate declined. The awkward exchange is part of a new public service announcement filmed by the odd couple, who teamed up to, err, prevent teen pregnancy. In the Candie's Foundation PSA, The Situation and Sarah Palin's daughter discuss the merits of safe sex versus abstinence. "I know you're all about that abstinence thing, but come on, B-Palin, are you serious?" The Situation asks ...
In a bid to find common ground in the contentious abortion debate, the federal government on Wednesday awarded $27 million to a host of state programs aimed at assisting pregnant teenagers and young parents. These grants will offer states and Indian tribes "much needed assistance to support vulnerable teens and women who are pregnant and parenting," said Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius. "With this funding, states will link these families to health education, child care, and other supports that can help brighten the future of parents and their children." Specifically, ...
Bristol Palin is following in her mother's footsteps, at least in so far as lucrative public speaking gigs go. The 19-year-old daughter of former Alaska governor Sarah Palin will earn $14,000 when she speaks in Louisville, Ky., Sept. 8, the Louisville Courier-Journal reports. The occasion is a fundraiser to benefit Lifehouse, a home for single mothers. Bristol knows the topic well: Her 2008 pregnancy drew the national spotlight when her mother campaigned for vice president as John McCain's running mate. She gave birth to son Tripp in December of that year and has had a highly publicized ...
Growing up is hard to do -- let alone in the national spotlight. Just ask Levi Johnston and Bristol Palin, who might as well be the stars of "The Not-So-Secret Lives of American Teenagers." The two teens thrust into the public eye by Sarah Palin's 2008 vice presidential bid are showing signs of progress in the growing-up area lately. Perhaps the adults -- and younger siblings -- around them might get a few clues from Levi and Bristol's recent behavior. This week, Johnston issued a statement apologizing to the Palin family via People magazine. Bristol offered her own statement on life as a ...
(June 24) -- Bristol Palin's acting debut is almost here. ABC has announced that the high-profile teen mom will guest-star on the July 5 episode of "The Secret Life of the American Teenager," an ABC Family drama about a teenage mother, played by actress Shailene Woodley. A clip from the upcoming episode shows the daughter of former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin assuring Woodley's character that she can make it as a young mother. "We're all teen moms," says Bristol, who plays herself on the show. The cameo is the latest stop on the 19-year-old's abstinence tour. Earlier this year, she signed on ...
Abstinence-based sex education remained front and center as a tool of public policy through the past decade, with a particular emphasis on convincing unmarried teenagers to forgo having sex. And that makes the results of a survey recently released by the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention particularly interesting. The report is titled "Teenagers in the United States: Sexual Activity, Contraceptive Use, and Childbearing, National Survey of Family Growth 2006-2008." It's a follow-up to a series of similar surveys, the last taken in 2002. The focus is on males and females ages ...
The Food and Drug Administration's Advisory Committee for Reproductive Health has voted 11-0 that ulipristal acetate is effective and safe for use as an emergency contraceptive. The new drug from HRA Pharma, called Ella, is one step up from the so-called Plan B in that it prevents pregnancy for up to 120 hours after unprotected sex. Plan B is made of Levonorgestrel, which is a progesterone-like hormone compound. It can prevent pregnancy up to 72 hours after intercourse and it's about 85 percent effective. Ella works up to 120 hours, or five days. It contains ulipristal acetate, which works to ...
(June 2) -- Attitudes among American teens about birth control, sexual activity and pregnancy have remained largely unchanged since 2002, according to a new federal report. Stalled progress is bad enough, but some subtle changes also have experts concerned. Most notably, more teens than ever are using the "rhythm method" to prevent pregnancy, and a growing number of teen girls approve of underage childbirth. The report, compiled by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, is based on interviews with 2,767 teens, ages 15 to 19, between 2006 and 2008. At the foundation of the report ...
