Tennessee

Republicans see an opportunity to win all three open House seats in the Volunteer State. The vacancies are in the 3rd District, where Republican Zach Wamp gave up his seat to make an unsuccessful run for governor, and the 6th and 8th districts, where Democratic incumbents are retiring. Democratic Gov. Phil Bredesen can't run again because of term limits. Mike McWherter, son of a former governor, hopes to keep the seat in the Democratic column. His GOP opponent is Knoxville Mayor Bill Haslam, who beat two more conservative opponents in the primary. There is no Senate race in the state this year. McCain won Tennessee in 2008.
