Click here to visit the new home of Politics Daily! The war in Iraq just isn't going gently into the night, is it? Sunday's parliamentary election took place amid a backdrop of mortar, grenade and bomb attacks in Baghdad and other major cities. The good news is that the elections went ahead and people voted. But the extreme political fragmentation that characterizes the country -- with some 6,000 candidates, from more than 80 parties, chasing a mere 325 parliamentary seats -- means that whatever coalition government results will be necessarily fragile. And even as President Obama praised Iraqi voters for their bravery in casting their ballots, ...
For Oscar lovers like me, the usual nail-biting anticipation that accompanies the annual Academy Awards is all the greater this year. Not only are there more films up in the category of Best Picture, but the rules by which that movie is selected have also changed. In a curious case of life imitating art, the British government is also looking at reforming its electoral system along similar lines. In both cases, the big question on everyone's mind is this: Who benefits? ...
The Afghan Cabinet said Monday that an airstrike by NATO forces on Sunday killed 33 civilians, including three women and one child, the Associated Press reports. The deaths came amid a major offensive in which U.S. and NATO forces have put a strong emphasis on protecting civilians from the Taliban and earning their trust. "We are extremely saddened by the tragic loss of innocent lives," NATO commander Gen. Stanley McChrystal said. "I have made it clear to our forces that we are here to protect the Afghan people, and inadvertently killing or injuring civilians undermines their trust and ...
(Feb. 2) – The Oscars are just about the only time each year when small movies are on equal footing with big ones, when our national conversation about movies focuses on merit and not just on box office. Or at least that used to be the case, until Tuesday morning. Thanks to the new Oscar rules, in a case of reverse affirmative action, the expansion of the Best Picture category from five slots to 10 gives big studio blockbusters an awards boost, at the expense of the smaller (usually independent or foreign) movies that need and deserve attention, at the one time of year that they might ...
BEVERLY HILLS, Calif. (Jan. 17) - The science-fiction blockbuster "Avatar" won best drama at the Golden Globes and picked up the directing honor for James Cameron on Sunday, raising the "Titanic" filmmaker's prospects for another Academy Awards triumph. It was a repeat of Cameron's Globes night 12 years ago, when "Titanic" won best drama and the directing prize on its way to dominating the Oscars. This time, though, instead of being "king of the world," as Cameron declared at the Oscars, he has become king of an alien landscape, elevating space fantasy to enormous critical ...
I'm late to the party on Katherine Bigelow's Iraq war masterpiece, "The Hurt Locker," and only saw it last week -- but with Monday's front-page announcement that Gen. Stanley McChrystal is going toe to toe with President Obama on the issue of sending more troops into Afghanistan, I was reminded in no uncertain terms of the impossibility of agreeing on a reasonable (which is to say, winnable) strategy for the U.S. in those two nations. ...
