Opinion: A Grassroots View of the Tea Party

Opinion: A Grassroots View of the Tea Party

(Feb. 21) -- Ever since the first Tea Party protest happened just over a year ago, the movement and its participants have endured any number of insults -- they're extremists, racists, etc. My favorite, though, was House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, who dismissed the entire phenomenon last year by saying that "it's not really a grass-roots movement. It's AstroTurf by some of the wealthiest people in America to keep the focus on tax cuts for the rich instead of for the great middle class." I haven't participated in any Tea Party events, but I am sympathetic to their cause. And if I had the opportunity ...

Is Dennis Kucinich Joining the Tea Party Movement?

Is Dennis Kucinich Joining the Tea Party Movement?

My time-space continuum warped when I heard that Dennis Kucinich had talked to tea partiers and found common ground. After the Democratic defeat in Massachusetts last month, Kucinich said, "There's nothing liberal about the bailouts. There's nothing liberal about standing by and watching banks use public money to get their executive bonuses. There's nothing liberal about giving insurance companies carte blanche to charge anything they want for health care...Since when did that become liberal?" A lot of citizens who once stumped for Obama – for change and hope, they thought – feel ...

Hillary Goes Third Party?

Hillary Goes Third Party?

Susan Estrich does a good job of illustrating what has to be the crackpot theory of the week. As crackpot theories go, it's a good one, having the necessary elements of being wildly out there, with that thin shred of plausibility that makes everyone go, "Hmmm..." The concern is that Hillary could take a page from the book of one Joe Lieberman, once and former good Democrat, and decide that having lost out on his party's nomination to someone he couldn't see winning a general election, the better option (for him) was to run himself in the fall. Which he did. And won. Beating the liberal ...

Ain't No Party Like A Third Party

Ain't No Party Like A Third Party

It's a shame Mike Bloomberg has decided against running for president. He's a smart guy and would be a strong candidate. I'm still holding out hope that Ron Paul will throw his hat in as an independent, or maybe as a Libertarian. And I'm thrilled that the much-maligned Ralph Nader announced he'll be around making a stink for the next eight months. (I'm not one of those weenies who blame Nader for the woeful Bush administration. They are too cowardly to admit that Al Gore ran a crappy race in '00 and probably didn't deserve to be president.)Here's hoping the Natural Law Party and the Marijuana ...

Ron Paul Doesn't Rule Out Third Party Run

Ron Paul Doesn't Rule Out Third Party Run

There are a lot of things happening these days, but in it's raw potential for chaos, this item in Newsweek might turn out to be the biggest story of the day. If you don't win, will you support the GOP nominee and promise not to run on the Libertarian or any other ticket?I'm not promising any of those things. If we have a Republican nominee that has convinced me they have come around on foreign policy ... I would consider it. As far as running on a third-party ticket, or [as an] independent, or Libertarian, I have no plans to do that. Well, "no plans" doesn't mean you won't.The best way I can ...

Does Ron Paul Throw a Hail Mary Pass?

By  Matt Singer - Politics Daily
Does Ron Paul Throw a Hail Mary Pass?

The National Review's David Frum makes a prediction: Ron Paul loses the GOP primary and launches a third party campaign for the White House. Frum's one of the nuevo-Republicans, which is to say, he thinks primarily in terms of neo-conservative foreign policy, so he sees a Paul run as being to the left of Hillary -- and thinks Ron Paul drags down Democratic numbers. ...
