Jefferson's Books Found in Mo. University Library

Dozens of Thomas Jefferson's books have been found in the rare books collection at Washington University in St. Louis. Scholars are now poring through the 28 titles and 74 volumes, searching for the occasional handwritten note from the nation's third president. And librarians say it's possible more of Jefferson's books will be found in the school's collection. The school announced the discovery Monday, on Presidents Day. Librarians say Jefferson's books were sold after his death to settle debts. His granddaughter, Ellen Wayles Randolph Coolidge, bid on many of the books. When she and her ...

Opinion: 2 Tucson Shooting Myths Debunked

The debate between left and right on contributing factors in the Tucson shootings has unfolded along utterly predictable and thoroughly unenlightening lines. Liberals accuse conservatives of overheated, gun-related rhetoric that created a hostile, edgy climate that may have encouraged the killer. The right responds that there's no evidence of Jared Lee Loughner's conservative orientation and that liberals make equally reprehensible and irresponsible statements. Neither side bothers to examine two highly dubious core assumptions: That the Barack Obama era constitutes a uniquely ...

Opinion: Turns Out, O'Donnell Is Right About 1st Amendment

(Oct. 27) -- Newspaper and TV pundits bashing Delaware's Christine O'Donnell with respect to the religion clauses of the First Amendment need to do some homework on the topic, as they obviously don't know anything about it. A good way to start might be to read the actual wording of the amendment, which O'Donnell's critics self-evidently haven't done, judging from the way they misstate its contents while neglecting to quote specific language. She is quite correct in suggesting that "separation of church and state" doesn't appear there, nor is such a construction justified by the ...

Opinion: Memo to Tea Partiers -- The Founders Were Elitists

Opinion: Memo to Tea Partiers -- The Founders Were Elitists

(Oct. 6) -- In a recent interview, John Kerry described the American electorate as people who don't "always pay much attention to what's going on" and who "are influenced by a simple slogan rather than by the facts or the truth." Kerry's political opponents -- especially the members of the tea party and other populists -- are having a field day with his remarks. From a political perspective, Kerry's comments were pretty dumb, especially coming from a former presidential candidate who was lambasted in 2004 for being too "elite." But was Kerry right about the American electorate? In a recent ...

House GOPers Exploit and Insult Thomas Jefferson

House GOPers Exploit and Insult Thomas Jefferson

Are the House Republicans as paranoid as the most extreme Tea Partier? On Thursday, House Minority leader John Boehner (R-Land of No) and his crew released a campaign manifesto called A Pledge to America, which outlined what they would do, should they gain control of the House in the coming congressional elections. The preamble to this glossy, 45-page document -- which doles out the expected: tax cuts for the rich, downsizing government, repealing the health care bill -- purposefully echoes the Declaration of Independence, noting that "America is an idea . . . that each of us is endowed by ...

American Political Sex Scandals: What Would We Do Without Them?

American Political Sex Scandals: What Would We Do Without Them?

America is a country, thankfully, that loves sex and political power. Think it's a modern phenomenon? Hardly. The country's Founding Fathers pioneered it. Take an event that happened during this month more than 200 years ago. On Sept. 1, 1802, the "Richmond Recorder" published a piece about Thomas Jefferson and his mistress, a slave simply known as "Sally." At the time, Jefferson was temporarily retired from politics and was spending a great amount of time on his Virginia plantation, Monticello. But he had collected an army of enemies, and they knew Jefferson liked to indulge in hanky ...

Opinion: 10 Good Reasons Not to Burn the Quran

(Sept. 8) -- Dear Dr. Terry Jones, Pastor, Dove World Outreach Center: On a warm late summer day at Gainesville Guitar Academy, a 15-minute drive from your church, children plunk out the sound of their favorite songs on guitars. Yesterday at the music school where I teach violin, I also listened to a student play guitar until his soft chords were drowned out by the shouts of demonstrators marching past our school. Our music school is in an almost entirely Muslim country, and the marchers were protesting your announced intention to burn copies of the Quran on Sept. 11. As a fellow American, ...

Opinion: Impoverishing Democracy

(July 22) -- Thomas Jefferson once observed, "Information is the currency of democracy." That's never been more true than it is today. We live, after all, in an information age, one that's seen a virtual explosion in new sources of information -- ranging from newspapers and TV to talk radio, cable news, millions upon millions of blogs, even billboards. Today, particularly on the Web, openness is supposed to be the watchword when it comes to communication. But, oddly enough, rules that govern much of our information currency are being written by regulatory agencies and lawmakers in closed ...

Fix Appears in Declaration of Independence

Fix Appears in Declaration of Independence

(July 3) -- With one smudge of a feathered fountain pen back in 1776, American history changed forever. Chemists and archivists analyzing the U.S. Declaration of Independence have long speculated about cross-outs and smudges in Thomas Jefferson's original rough draft of the document. One smudge was much more aggressively wiped out than others. And on Friday, officials at the Library of Congress revealed for the first time what they believe was a Freudian slip by one of America's Founding Fathers. Jefferson is believed to have first written the word "subjects" to describe the American ...
