Click here to visit the new home of Politics Daily!WASHINGTON -- Out with Sarah. In with The Donald. President Barack Obama has launched his re-election bid in a low-key manner, but the Republican Party's search for a challenger seems stranger by the day. GOP celebrities like Sarah Palin aren't getting much buzz. Mainstream candidates like Mitt Romney and Tim Pawlenty aren't getting much traction. It's people once considered highly unlikely to compete seriously for the party's nomination who are creating big stirs in early voting states, a reflection of an unformed and uncertain GOP presidential field. Republican activists in Iowa, New ...
CONCORD, N.H. -- The Republicans vying to challenge President Barack Obama next year are universally panning his budget proposal as political gimmickry and another example of his inability to lead. The likely candidates lined up Wednesday against Obama's budget proposal, which would cut the federal deficit by $4 trillion over 12 years by eliminating health care fraud, raising taxes on the wealthy and paring defense spending. Republicans cast it as a hollow response to spending outline proposed earlier by Rep. Paul Ryan, R-Wis. "It was as if Ryan was the president and (Obama) was a desperate ...
MINNEAPOLIS – Former Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty may be running for president, but he's not ready to be official about it. Pawlenty moved quickly Tuesday to knock down a CNN story that appeared to show him officially entering the race. During an airing of Piers Morgan Tonight, taped earlier in the day, the talk show host remarked on Pawlenty's low standing in early polls. He asked if Pawlenty would consider being real estate tycoon Donald Trump's No. 2 on a ticket. The former governor laughed and responded, "I'm running for president." Later in the interview, Morgan asked Pawlenty to ...
Apparently, the birth certificate was just the beginning. Donald Trump, the real estate mogul and reality TV star recently turned birther, now says that liberal activist Bill Ayers wrote President Barack Obama's signature book, "Dreams of My Father." "'Dreams of My Father' was genius, and they give him full credit," Trump said of Obama in an interview Wednesday with conservative radio host Laura Ingraham. "But now it's coming out that Bill Ayers wrote it. And [Obama's] only there because of 'Dreams of My Father.'" Ayers, a co-founder of the radical Weather Underground movement that carried ...

Former Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty released a video on Facebook Monday announcing he has formed a presidential exploratory committee. In the two-minute video, Pawlenty says his experience as a Midwestern governor has prepared him for the job of commander in chief. He also makes numerous references to the founding fathers and Presidents Lincoln and Reagan. Click play to watch video: "We the people of the United States will take back our government. This is our country," he says. "That's why today I am announcing the formation of an exploratory committee to run for president of the ...
If Sarah Palin is seriously considering a run for president in 2012, the latest poll on her standing among Republican candidates contains the same kind of bad news found in earlier surveys. A Washington Post/ABC News poll, conducted March 10-13, found that among eight frequently mentioned candidates, Palin was viewed negatively by a significantly higher percentage of Republicans and GOP-leaning independents than the others. (Story; Poll data). While 58 percent expressed a favorable view of her, those seeing her unfavorably added up to 37 percent. That's a jump from a year ago when the number ...
Mitt Romney, the sort-of second-place finisher in the 2008 Republican presidential sweepstakes, is taking a different approach this year. Rather than trying to create an early splash, Romney is taking his time in declaring a presidential bid and, as The New York Times puts it, "is operating in a cautious, low-key fashion . . . with limited news coverage." The conventional view is that the former Massachusetts governor is doing so to avoid becoming the official front-runner -- a position that would place a large bull's eye on his back. But there may be another reason: He doesn't want to live in ...
WAUKEE, Iowa -- Who needs declared candidates? The race for the 2012 Republican presidential nomination unofficially launched at a church here Monday night when 2,000 fired-up conservatives got their first side-by-side look at five White House prospects. The potential contenders ranged from former House speaker Newt Gingrich, once behind only the vice president in the line of the succession for the presidency, to Herman Cain, an Atlanta entrepreneur and radio host who has never held office. Gov. Terry Branstad was onstage, as was conservative Christian strategist Ralph Reed. The roster ...
Everyone is used to the familiar "horse race" poll that tells us who is out front when it comes to a campaign, but Quinnipiac University has a different measure for some of today's leading political personalities: namely, who ranks the "warmest" and "coldest" on a "feelings thermometer"? ...
