Charlie Rangel, Luke Russert Spar Over 'Dumb Question' in Ethics Interview

New York Rep. Charlie Rangel is 80 years old and facing ethics charges that could derail his career of nearly four decades in Congress, but he's still in fighting trim. Just ask NBC correspondent Luke Russert, who got an apology from the gravelly-voiced lawmaker Friday after a brisk exchange the day before between the two men. They got into the dust-up Thursday in the Capitol after Russert asked Rangel whether he was afraid of losing his job. "What are you talking about?" Rangel snapped back as other reporters looked on. "You just trying to make copy? How do you think I got my job? I was ...

Emily's Post: From Gossip Fodder to Gossip Columnist

Having been fodder for every gossip column in town, starting today I'm turning the tables -- and becoming one D.C. gossip columnist who fully gets what it's like to be on the receiving end. Everybody knows Washington politics is not for the meek or thin-skinned. And I've lived, worked and loved D.C. politics and media since I was 18 years old. In the years since, I've toiled on the Hill, at the State Department, in the Bush 43 administration, and for the Washington bureaus of two TV network news divisions. I've also counted chads in the Florida recount, run for my life from the Capitol on ...

Michael Jackson Controversy: California Mayor Ordered U.S. Flag at Half-Staff

On the day of Michael Jackson's funeral, Mayor Jim Dear of Carson, Calif., ordered that the American flag outside City Hall be lowered to half-staff, a gesture generally used to honor the deaths of presidents, police officers, firefighters and other heroes. The decision created a national backlash, prompting Dear to make a 180-degree turn -- and mount an effort to ensure mayors follow the rules when lowering the U.S. flag. ...

John McCain Terrified to Return to 'The View'?

If you're a politician, what television interview do you fear the most? Back in the 70's and 80's the specter of answering Dan Rather's lacerating (some would say "obnoxious") questions was enough to keep some politicos awake at night. Before he passed away, Tim Russert mastered the art of the "gotcha" by scouring his guest's entire recorded spoken record for inconsistencies. FOX's Sean Hannity and Chris Wallace often boast about how certain elected officials (mostly liberals) seem too afraid to appear on their respective shows. And everybody knows that you'd better not turn up on Jim Lehrer's ...

David Gregory Named Host of 'Meet the Press'

Politico's Mike Allen reports that NBC has named a permanent host for "Meet the Press," White House correspondent David Gregory. NBC News plans to name David Gregory as moderator of "Meet the Press," infusing one of television's most prized franchises with a sharp edge leavened by a youthful style and versatility, according to network executives. The plan to anoint Gregory is not final but will be as soon as today, the executives said. NBC spokespeople refused to comment, saying the network would make the announcement. Meet the Press has been without a permanent moderator since the untimely ...
