Click here to visit the new home of Politics Daily! Now that Alaska Sen. Lisa Murkowski has conceded, she has become the latest victim of a growing trend: Appropriations Committee members who have lost this year. Once thought of as a powerful committee for members wanting to "bring home the bacon," in today's political environment sitting on an appropriations panel seems to be an albatross. "Earmarking is a corrupt practice, plain and simple," says Andy Roth, a vice president at the conservative Club for Growth. "Voters understand that, but insecure politicians do not. And that's why the old adage that pork buys you votes doesn't work. It ...
It's been a tough month for Sarah Palin's mama -- and papa -- grizzlies. Still, her endorsement record this year is in positive territory. After a great June, several candidates endorsed by Palin lost in primary elections. Four more will take the primary test Tuesday and another six on Sept. 14. The former Alaska governor and Republican vice presidential candidate is all over Facebook and Twitter promoting her endorsements. And she's used her political action committee to donate some $87,500 to candidates. Thus far, our tally shows Palin is 6-2 in endorsements in governors' races, 3-6 in ...
WASHINGTON (Aug. 3) -- In a surprise primary outcome, political newcomer Rick Snyder dispatched Michigan's attorney general, a longtime congressman and two others Tuesday to win the Republican nomination in the race to succeed term-limited Democratic Gov. Jennifer Granholm. Lansing Mayor Virg Bernero grabbed the Democratic nod, but the GOP candidate automatically became the favorite in the economically ailing state. Michigan has the nation's second-highest unemployment rate - at 13.2 percent - and scores of foreclosures, and that has been a drag on the two-term Democratic governor. With less ...
The August primary season begins in earnest Tuesday with the focus on Republican voters in Michigan, who will choose their candidate for governor, and in Kansas, where two long-serving congressmen are competing for the seat of GOP Sen. Sam Brownback, long a leading conservative. Both the crowded Michigan race and the Kansas contest between Reps. Todd Tiahrt and Jerry Moran, are close, according to the latest polls. It is also primary day in Missouri, but there isn't much question that the namesakes of two of the state's longstanding political families -- Democrat Robin Carnahan and ...
Rep. Jerry Moran has taken a 42 percent to 32 percent lead over Rep. Todd Tiahrt in their battle over who will be the Republican nominee in Kansas for the seat of GOP Sen. Sam Brownback who is running for governor, according to a SurveyUSA poll conducted March 26-28. A third candidate in the race gets 5 percent and 21 percent are undecided. The margin of error is 4.4 points. Moran has a 42 percent to 34 percent lead among self-described conservatives (60 percent of the sample) with 19 percent undecided. He also leads 45 percent to 29 percent among moderates (30 percent of the sample) with 21 ...
Rep. Jerry Moran is leading Rep. Todd Tiahrt for the GOP nomination to succeed Kansas Republican Sen. Sam Brownback, besting him 40 percent to 33 percent with 27 percent undecided, according to a SurveyUSA poll conducted Jan. 29-31. The margin of error is 4.4 points. Brownback is running for governor. SurveyUSA says that's a modest bump upwards for Moran since its last poll. The two run evenly among conservatives (62 percent of the sample), but Moran has a 47 percent to 25 percent advantage among moderates, who make up 29 percent of the sample. Twenty-nine percent of moderates are ...
The race for the Republican nod in Kansas to succeed retiring Sen. Sam Brownback is knotted up, with seven-term Rep. Jerry Moran leading eight-term Rep. Todd Tiahrt 37 percent to 34 percent with 29 percent undecided, according to a SurveyUSA poll conducted Dec. 4-6. The margin of error is 4.6 points. Brownback is not running because he is honoring a pledge not to serve more than two terms. Moran's biggest edge is among self-described moderates (30 percent of the sample) where he leads 46 percent to 25 percent with 29 percent undecided. Tiahrt leads 40 percent to 33 percent among ...
Rep. Jerry Moran is leading Rep. Todd Tiahrt by 43 percent to 27 percent with 30 percent undecided in a GOP primary match-up in the race for the Senate seat being vacated by two-term Republican Sam Brownback who is running for governor, according to a SurveyUSA poll conducted Oct. 2-4. ...
Earlier I told you about certain Democratic members of Congress who are staying as far away from Barack Obama as possible this election season. Well on the other side of the aisle there are a number of Republicans who won't be getting behind John McCain's candidacy. They've been dubbed the "new gang of 14," a reference to the group of lawmakers, including McCain, who broke with conservatives on President Bush's judicial nominations. Not surprisingly, most of them lean sharply right and aren't thrilled with McCain's stances on issues like campaign finance reform, immigration, taxes, etc. One ...
The Washington Post's Dana Milbank reports that on Wednesday a majority of House Republicans voted "against motherhood." Actually, they voted against a resolution "celebrating the role of mothers in the United States and supporting the goals and ideals of Mother's Day." After the resolution passed unanimously, Republican Representative Todd Tiahrt of Kansas stood up and said, "Mr. Speaker, I move to reconsider the vote." The House re-voted and this time 178 Republicans voted against the resolution. Milbank lampooned the move, writing, "Republicans are now confronted with a John Kerry-esque ...
