First Lady Michelle Obama makes a guest appearance on "The Oprah Winfrey Show" Friday, taping a program dealing with military families and capping off a busy week with a daytrip to Chicago. Politics Daily was told by a White House source that Mrs. Obama will use the show, airing Jan. 27, to unveil a national campaign to help and honor military families. Aiding military families -- at a time when American soldiers are engaged in conflicts in Afghanistan and Iraq -- is already one of the top issues Mrs. Obama champions. (Next Thursday, Mrs. Obama flies to Columbia, S.C., to visit Fort Jackson, ...
"I was sitting on the sun porch at my parents' house, watching the NBA Finals." That's the easy, don't-need-to-think-about-it answer whenever the question "Where were you on June 17, 1994?" comes up. Although the question is usually phrased, "Where were you during the OJ chase?" That's because when OJ Simpson and Al Cowlings hopped into the infamous "White Bronco" and took off down the LA Freeway, forever forcing the world to recognize "celebrity news coverage" as something other than black-and-white photos of Joe Dimaggio and Marilyn Monroe, everyone in America stopped what they were doing ...
Gen. Colin Powell returned to the State Department Monday for an emotional unveiling of his official Secretary of State portrait. Powell and current Secretary of State Hillary Clinton presided over the unveiling of the portrait, which will hang with those of the other former secretaries of State in the secretary's suite of offices. When Powell was introduced to speak in the Ben Franklin room on the top floor at the department, the crowd cheered and applauded loudly. Powell was surrounded his immediate family -- wife Alma Powell, daughter Linda Powell, son Michael Powell, daughter-in-law ...
In the wake of a sex scandal, Tiger Woods released a statement in which he admits "transgressions" but then asks for "privacy" in three of the five paragraphs. Tiger Woods does not admit having affairs with Rachel Uchitel and Jaimee Grubbs -- both of whom have been linked to him or who have claimed a sexual affair with him. He was circumspect in his written statement, saying: "I have let my family down and I regret those transgressions with all of my heart. I have not been true to my values and the behavior my family deserves." I think we can all read between the lines. Woods puts it ...
Having been fodder for every gossip column in town, starting today I'm turning the tables -- and becoming one D.C. gossip columnist who fully gets what it's like to be on the receiving end. Everybody knows Washington politics is not for the meek or thin-skinned. And I've lived, worked and loved D.C. politics and media since I was 18 years old. In the years since, I've toiled on the Hill, at the State Department, in the Bush 43 administration, and for the Washington bureaus of two TV network news divisions. I've also counted chads in the Florida recount, run for my life from the Capitol on ...
If there was one answer that seemed to epitomize John McCain's lackluster performance in Tuesday's presidential debate with Barack Obama, it came when Tom Brokaw asked each man whether the federal government should start a Manhattan-project-like task force to attend to the country's energy woes, or whether it should fund the thousands of small business who are already busy picking up the government's slack response. At the heart of the question was what, exactly, the role of government should be to fix what both men agree needs to be a priority for the next administration .McCain's response ...
Tonight's debate between Barack Obama and John McCain at Belmont University in Nashville, TN will be in a highly structured town hall-type style with the pre-screened questions coming completely from undecided, but likely, voters rather than a moderator. There will be a moderator, NBC's Tom Brokaw, who has the final authority on the questions selected. from a field of 100-150 pre-submitted questions from the audience and a few more submitted from the internet. Mike Allen from Politico reported Sunday that Barack Obama will not sit idly by while Sarah Barracuda is unleashed on the public with a series of October surprises meant to smear Obama and shift American's focus away from real issues during the campaign.Sen. Barack Obama (D-Ill.) on Monday will launch a multimedia campaign to draw attention to the involvement of Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) in the "Keating Five" savings-and-loan scandal of 1989-91, which blemished McCain's public image and set him on his course as a self-styled reformer.Retaliating for what it calls McCain's ...

The network is still in talks to decide who will try to fill the unfillable shoes of Tim Russert on a permanent basis.
