'Band of Brothers' Unit Loses Another Hero

The oldest living member of Easy Company, the World War II unit made famous by the TV miniseries "Band of Brothers," has died. Ed Mauser passed away on Friday at the age of 94, according to the Omaha World Herald. He had been suffering from pancreatic cancer. "It was a long trip, but everything comes to an end," Mauser said in an interview not long before his death, according to the Herald. The 506th Parachute Infantry Regiment, Easy Company, parachuted into Europe in June 1944, near Normandy, France. The unit later fought in the Battle of the Bulge and occupied Eagle's Nest, Hitler's ...

Tom Hanks Takes Pity on 'Poor Slobs' in White House Press Corps

Tom Hanks dropped in on the "poor slobs" in the White House press corps Thursday after the actor and producer Steven Spielberg enjoyed a private screening of their new HBO series, "The Pacific," with President Obama and his family. Hanks detoured from the White House movie theater to the Brady Briefing Room to check on an espresso machine that he presented to reporters in 2004 after discovering the working press didn't have a simple coffee pot, CNN reported. The espresso-maker was still there, but not in very good shape. You're supposed to clean it after each use, he advised. "I am going to ...

On Michelle Obama's Rounds: Reese Witherspoon, Tom Hanks, New Anti-Obesity Challenge

Some news on First Lady Michelle Obama's childhood obesity campaign will come in the next paragraphs, but first, since I am still in post-Oscar mode, this dispatch will also touch on the movies. Here's what the First Couple will be viewing Thursday night at the White House movie theater: A preview of the new HBO series about the Pacific front in World War II, titled simply "The Pacific." Expected at the screening in the small theater on the first floor of the White House: Tom Hanks, Steven Spielberg, top military brass, some members of Congress and invitees from male and female vets ...

Dan Brown's Sin: No Story

Dan Brown's Sin: No Story

I finally saw Angels & Demons last night, a month after it opened – still way ahead of schedule for me – and think Tom Hanks deserves an Oscar for delivering some of its most serious lines without cracking up. No wonder the Vatican didn't bother trashing this sequel (in its print version, it was a prequel) to Dan Brown's The Da Vinci Code -- much to Ron Howard's chagrin, I'm sure. A couple of baby thumbs up: Heckuva job approximating St. Peter's Square in a parking lot in L.A. And that Ewan McGregor made one cute camerlengo. But if you're going to make a movie that's all ...

The Once-Over: Week Six

The Once-Over: Week Six

With attention spans dwindling, we forego full game-by-game previews to give you the essentials you need to know about every contest this glorious NFL weekend. Click here to go back in time. The 1sCincinnati (0-5) at NY Jets (2-2): I'm just going to quickly put this on the table -- when the highlight of your season thus far is your "star" wide receiver kissing the head coach on the head, things are not going well. The Bengals look to me a lot like the cast of "Entourage" looked last week trying to "act" on mushrooms. There is no way bad actors should be forced to act like they're on drugs, ...

Tom Hanks Thinks Daisuke Matsuzaka Is Ready for the Silver Screen

Tom Hanks Thinks Daisuke Matsuzaka Is Ready for the Silver Screen

It's been quite a while since a great, or even memorable, baseball movie has arrived on the scene. I suppose mileage varies on these kinds of question but the last one that sticks out for me was 61* (I've tried to eliminate all memories of the excerable Fever Pitch), which wasn't great but was at least evocative of a particular time in baseball history. I briefly thought that There Will Be Blood would cover the 2004 ALCS but, alas, it turned out to be a milkshake of a different color. It would seem that Tom Hanks has also noticed the lack of diamonds on celluloid. In an interview in Tokyo, ...
