Colin Powell Portrait Unveiled to Tears and Cheers

Gen. Colin Powell returned to the State Department Monday for an emotional unveiling of his official Secretary of State portrait. Powell and current Secretary of State Hillary Clinton presided over the unveiling of the portrait, which will hang with those of the other former secretaries of State in the secretary's suite of offices. When Powell was introduced to speak in the Ben Franklin room on the top floor at the department, the crowd cheered and applauded loudly. Powell was surrounded his immediate family -- wife Alma Powell, daughter Linda Powell, son Michael Powell, daughter-in-law ...

Does Tiger Woods Deserve Privacy for his 'Transgressions'?

In the wake of a sex scandal, Tiger Woods released a statement in which he admits "transgressions" but then asks for "privacy" in three of the five paragraphs. Tiger Woods does not admit having affairs with Rachel Uchitel and Jaimee Grubbs -- both of whom have been linked to him or who have claimed a sexual affair with him. He was circumspect in his written statement, saying: "I have let my family down and I regret those transgressions with all of my heart. I have not been true to my values and the behavior my family deserves." I think we can all read between the lines. Woods puts it ...

Emily's Post: From Gossip Fodder to Gossip Columnist

Having been fodder for every gossip column in town, starting today I'm turning the tables -- and becoming one D.C. gossip columnist who fully gets what it's like to be on the receiving end. Everybody knows Washington politics is not for the meek or thin-skinned. And I've lived, worked and loved D.C. politics and media since I was 18 years old. In the years since, I've toiled on the Hill, at the State Department, in the Bush 43 administration, and for the Washington bureaus of two TV network news divisions. I've also counted chads in the Florida recount, run for my life from the Capitol on ...

Old McCain vs. 'That One'

Old McCain vs. 'That One'

If there was one answer that seemed to epitomize John McCain's lackluster performance in Tuesday's presidential debate with Barack Obama, it came when Tom Brokaw asked each man whether the federal government should start a Manhattan-project-like task force to attend to the country's energy woes, or whether it should fund the thousands of small business who are already busy picking up the government's slack response. At the heart of the question was what, exactly, the role of government should be to fix what both men agree needs to be a priority for the next administration .McCain's response ...

I'll See Your Ayers and Raise You a Keating 5

Mike Allen from Politico reported Sunday that Barack Obama will not sit idly by while Sarah Barracuda is unleashed on the public with a series of October surprises meant to smear Obama and shift American's focus away from real issues during the campaign.Sen. Barack Obama (D-Ill.) on Monday will launch a multimedia campaign to draw attention to the involvement of Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) in the "Keating Five" savings-and-loan scandal of 1989-91, which blemished McCain's public image and set him on his course as a self-styled reformer.Retaliating for what it calls McCain's ...

Obama's Superdelegate Surprise?

Obama's Superdelegate Surprise?

Barack Obama's campaign has apparently identified 50 superdelegates who are ready to go public with their support for him over Hillary Clinton.Veteran newsman Tom Brokaw said Tuesday that sources very close to the Democratic presidential hopeful's camp told him that those superdelegates would announce their support for Obama "before too long.""That's a lot. That's a big number," Brokaw said on MSNBC this morning. Clinton is currently ahead in the superdelegate count but Obama's new support would propel his count to just beyond Clinton's. An AP count has Clinton with 241 superdelegates and ...
