Microsoft Launches Online Campaign Tool to Compete with Google's

Microsoft has released a new product it says will help citizens organize politically, build advocacy campaigns and engage with government. The new TownHall software was unveiled this week at the Politics Online Conference in Washington, D.C. On its blog, Microsoft says the application "combines the grassroots appeal of the town hall meeting with the reach of the Web." TownHall lets politicians host a website for posing questions and topics and allows voters to weigh in. Users can create profiles and submit their own questions. TownHall is similar to Moderator, a tool launched by Google ...

Torture Probe, Health Care, the Economy: For Obama, Hostility From All Sides

Torture Probe, Health Care, the Economy: For Obama, Hostility From All Sides

It's a bit simplistic, but generally true, for reporters to say that if we have antagonized people on both sides of an issue we're reporting on, we are probably doing our job well. Perhaps Barack Obama embraces the same belief about "presidenting." ...

Tom Vilsack's Farm-Country Tour: A Different Kind of Town Hall

Health care town-hall meetings are certainly stealing the spotlight these days -- but they're not the only game in town. Mostly unnoticed, a quieter series of town halls is taking place on a different crisis: Secretary of Agriculture Tom Vilsack has embarked on a listening tour through rural America to hear about the problems facing farmers. And it's a good thing too, because back on the farm, all is not well. ...

Does Hate Speech Have Limits?

Does Hate Speech Have Limits?

Excuse me if the sight of folks with guns outside a presidential appearance doesn't automatically make me think "Second Amendment." I have nothing against guns. My oldest brother has a very big one. He last used it to shoot a moose. Yes, it's legal to carry a weapon, but is it the best way to encourage debate on health care? Outside Barack Obama's New Hampshire town hall, a man with a gun carried a sign, "It is time to water the tree of liberty!" referencing the Jefferson quote, "The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time, with the blood of patriots and tyrants." In Arizona, ...

Video: Barney Frank Confronts Town Hall Protester

Earlier today, Massachusetts representative Barney Frank had a run-in with a town hall protester who opposes President Obama's proposed health care reform. The woman asked asked the congressman, "Why do you continue to support a Nazi policy?" Frank's off-the-cuff response shows why he has become a favorite of cable television talk shows. Watch: ...

Did Sarah Palin Flip-Flop on 'Death Panels'?

Who knew that Sarah Palin was such a uniter? How else can you explain how the right and left want to wrap their wings around her. Conservatives embrace her as a voice of the future, liberals hail her as a present-day object of ridicule. Enter the Center for American Progress, definitely in the latter group. In a piece on its "Think Progress" Web site, the group takes delight in pointing out that the very same Sarah Palin who has inspired so much hell-raising with her little Facebook "death panels" description, not too long ago proclaimed her belief in the kind of living will planning she now ...

Rep. Sheila Jackson Puts Town Hall Questioner on Hold to Talk on Phone

Rep. Sheila Jackson Puts Town Hall Questioner on Hold to Talk on Phone

All kinds of bad behavior has been reported from health care town halls across the country, but it's usually perpetrated by protesters, not politicians. Here's a case of a congresswoman forgetting her manners. At a forum in Houston Tuesday, Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee, a Democrat, took questions from constituents. As one woman stood up and posed her question, Jackson Lee began talking on her cell phone, seemingly ignoring her constituent. Someone in the crowd can be heard angrily saying, "Seriously? Really? I mean, come on. Dude!" After a few minutes, the congresswoman hung up and answered the ...

RNC Chairman Michael Steele: Don't Blame Us for Town Hall Protests

RNC Chairman Michael Steele: Don't Blame Us for Town Hall Protests

RNC Chairman Michael Steele Wednesday pushed back at Democratic claims that the GOP is behind rowdy protests at congressional town hall meetings, saying, "To call this some sort of Republican cabal is baloney, or another 'b' word if you like." The GOP chairman also used the 200-day mark of the Obama administration on Friday as a jumping off point to criticize several administration and Congressional initiatives. On the still-struggling economy, Steele acknowledged that Republicans played their part in "opening some of these doors," and that they had to admit to their own role in the ...

Angry Mobs or Concerned Citizens? DNC Calls Out GOP for Town Hall Protests

From the YouTube account of "DemsRapidResponse" comes this video produced by the Democratic National Committee to counter what it calls "mobs" assembled by "high level Republican operatives" (cue images of Republican National Committee Chairman Michael Steele, Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, conservative radio host Rush Limbaugh and GOP House Minority Leader John Boehner) and demonstrations taken from the playbook of "the right wing extremist Republican base." ...
