Top Marine Says DADT Repeal Won't Lead to Exodus in Force

WASHINGTON -- The Marine Corps commandant who once said openly gay service members would be a dangerous "distraction" and was among the most outspoken opponents of repealing the military's "don't ask, don't tell" policy said today he does not expect to lose troops over the change. "I haven't had any indication yet at all, not at all," Gen. James Amos told reporters when asked if he expected the mass exodus of troops that Sen. John McCain and other critics predicted if the ban was lifted. Amos was visiting troops in Afghanistan's Helmand Province when President Barack Obama signed the repeal ...

Gates' Big Knife at the Pentagon: Who Wins, Who Loses

Gates' Big Knife at the Pentagon: Who Wins, Who Loses

The official Pentagon spending request is still weeks away, but some winners and losers are already emerging in the battle for a shrinking portion of the budget pie. Defense Secretary Robert Gates announced major changes to the Pentagon's budget that are expected to rein in future defense spending. "We must come to realize that not every defense program is necessary, not every defense dollar is sacred and well spent, and that more of nearly everything is simply not sustainable," he told reporters at the Pentagon on Thursday. Brittany Y. Bateman, U.S. Air Force An ...

Gates Shifts Military Spending: 'Not Every Defense Dollar is Sacred'

A draining war and record-high defense spending financed by borrowing are driving yet another effort to control the military budget. Defense Secretary Robert M. Gates, citing a "grim financial outlook'' but also the "growing peril of the future,'' Thursday announced minor shifts within the defense budget of about $178 billion over five years. "Not every defense dollar is sacred,'' he told reporters at the Pentagon. But, he warned, "We shrink from our global responsibilities at our peril,'' and he said under the current Obama administration plan, the defense budget will continue to rise ...

Obama in Afghanistan: Thanks U.S. Troops for 'Tough Fight'

(Dec. 3) - Days before signing off on a classified review of progress in the war, President Obama flew Friday to Afghanistan under heavy guard for a lightning visit. Bad weather shut down a planned meeting with President Hamid Karzai in Kabul, but Obama met with U.S. troops at the huge U.S. Bagram air base north of the Afghan capital. ...

Obama in Afghanistan: No Terror 'Safe Haven'

BAGRAM AIR FIELD, Afghanistan (Dec. 3) - President Barack Obama told U.S. troops during a surprise holiday-season visit that they are making important progress in the war, and he pledged that Afghanistan would never again be a "safe haven for terrorists" who want to attack the United States. "You will succeed in your mission," Obama told more than 3,500 cheering troops in a huge hangar. "We said we were going to break the Taliban's momentum. That's what you're doing. You're going on the offense, tired of playing defense." Obama had traveled to Afghanistan to thank the troops and to deal with ...

US Wobbles on 2011 Date for Afghan Withdrawal

US Wobbles on 2011 Date for Afghan Withdrawal

(Nov. 11) -- U.S. troops could be looking at four more years in Afghanistan. That's according to top Obama administration officials, who are now talking more about the end of 2014 as the date when Afghans will take charge of their own security rather than the summer 2011 for the start of the U.S. pullout. The once-steadfast deadline of July 2011 was fixed by President Barack Obama upon approving a surge of 30,000 more American troops to the embattled country. But after both public and private protestations from Afghan President Hamid Karzai, who has said his armed forces are nowhere near ...

'Medal of Honor' Video Game Still Banned by Military, Despite 'Taliban' Change

(Oct. 6) -- What's in a name? A whole lot, says the military. Or wait, maybe not quite so much. It's hard to tell, actually. On Oct. 1, game publisher Electronic Arts removed a controversial feature in its new "Medal of Honor" game that would have allowed the player to control the Taliban in the game's multi-player mode by renaming them the "opposing force." The publisher was responding to a firestorm of criticism, the most significant of which was probably the U.S. military's decision to ban the game at its bases. Now that the publisher has changed the feature, however, the military still ...

EA Defends Taliban Name Change in 'Medal of Honor'

(Oct. 4) -- In the weeks leading up to EA's decision to finally yank a controversial feature of its new "Medal of Honor" game that would have allowed the player to control the Taliban in multiplayer mode, publisher Electronic Arts vehemently defended its position as a crucial issue of free speech and its game as a piece of art. Now that the company has relented to the increasing pressure and renamed the Taliban "opposing force," it's arguing that it isn't that important, after all. "The only thing that has changed is one seven-letter word in the menu screen," EA spokesman Jeff Brown told ...
