Locals in Beebe, Ark., were mystified when as many as 5,000 red-winged blackbirds dropped out of the sky Dec. 31. Studies commissioned by the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission ruled out possible causes such as disease and poison. The tests revealed hemorrhaging "consistent with blunt trauma," according to a Southeastern Cooperative Wildlife Disease Study. "In most instances, such traumatic injuries in wild birds are due to flying into stationary objects ...
(Nov. 17) -- The Food Safety and Modernization Act, a comprehensive overhaul of the power of the FDA and USDA to regulate food safety, cleared a major hurdle today after spending more than a year stalled on the Senate floor. In September, it seemed that the bill was dead after last-minute opposition from Sen. Tom Coburn, R-Okla., but now the lame-duck session has voted to break the filibuster and move ahead debating the controversial bill. The bill has sparked fierce debates on a number of fronts, but with the Senate's 74-25 vote for cloture, those can't last for more than 30 more hours ...
(Oct. 20) -- The Obama administration has agreed to pay $680 million to Native American farmers who claimed the government denied them the same low-interest rate loans given to white farmers between 1981 and 2007. The farmers filed a class-action lawsuit against the U.S. Department of Agriculture 11 years ago. Under a settlement announced Tuesday, eligible farmers and ranchers can get up to $250,000 each if they can prove the USDA caused them economic losses, Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack told The Wall Street Journal. But most farmers will likely opt for a $50,000 payment that requires ...
(Aug. 30) -- A strain of E. coli that the government doesn't regulate has already sickened hamburger eaters in two states. And federal food safety detectives say more cases may be identified as we approach the summer's last big weekend for picnics and barbecues. The supplier, Cargill Meat Solutions Corp. in Wyalusing, Pa., has recalled approximately 8,500 pounds of ground beef products. Cargill is the nation's second-largest beef processor. The meat was shipped to Connecticut and Maryland for distribution to other states. Justin Sullivan, Getty Images The USDA Food Safety and Inspection ...
(Aug. 30) -- There is no "special treatment" for an E. coli infection, according to the FamilyDoctor.org. Physicians recommend resting and drinking plenty of water to flush the system of unwanted bacteria. Unless your doctor instructs you to do so, it is not advisable to consume antidiarrheal medication, which instead of treating the infection will actually delay the process of removing bacteria from the intestines. (Aug. 30) -- The symptoms associated with an infection of Escherichia coli, better known by its abbreviation, E. coli, include bloody diarrhea, dehydration and, in severe cases, kidney failure, according to the U.S. Food Safety and Inspection Service. Other cases have reported abdominal pain, nausea and vomiting. The bacterium is most threatening to people with weak immune systems, such is infants and the elderly. Individuals who believe that they are infected with E. coli are advised to contact a health care professional. For more information: E. Coli Recall Alert: USDA Announces 8,500 ...
(Aug. 30) -- Just in time for Labor Day weekend, the U.S. Agriculture Department's Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) announced that a Pennsylvania meat company is recalling 8,500 pounds of ground beef products, due to concerns about E. coli 026. What, exactly, is being recalled? Ground beef produced by Cargill Meat Solutions of Wyalusing, Pa., with a "use/freeze by" date of July 1, 2010. The stock of 42-pound cases was distributed to various locations in eight states along the East Cost: Connecticut Maine Maryland Massachusetts New Hampshire New York New Jersey ...
WASHINGTON (Aug. 23) -- Acknowledging that the hunger faced by millions of American students during the summertime is "a catastrophe," the top nutrition official at the U.S. Department of Agriculture wants to experiment with a totally new approach to feeding poor kids during the months they have no access to subsidized meals at school cafeterias. The idea: issue a seasonal electronic benefits card to families whose children are eligible for free or reduced-price school lunches during the academic year. In an interview with AOL News, Undersecretary for Food and Nutrition Kevin Concannon said ...
An investigation finds the federal government provides schools with meat that many fast food restaurants would reject. McDonald's, Burger King, Jack in the Box and other chains are more rigorous than the Department of Agriculture when it comes to checking beef and chicken for bacteria and dangerous pathogens, USA Today reported. The paper studied records from the past three years and found fast food restaurants test ground beef up to 10 times more often than the USDA tests meat for the National School Lunch Program. The USDA has supplied schools with old chicken, called "spent hens," that ...
