Now people can support the homeless by putting their spare change into shiny, red parking meters that will be installed throughout the city. The program, dubbed the Homeless Outreach Service Team, or HOST, was created in response to the many homeless panhandlers in Salt Lake. Proceeds collected from the meters will go to the Pamela J. Atkinson Foundation, which will distribute the funds to the city's homeless service providers. Salt Lake City Mayor Ralph Becker says ...
WASHINGTON -- Millions of gallons of potentially hazardous chemicals and known carcinogens were injected into wells by leading oil and gas service companies from 2005-2009, a report by three House Democrats said Saturday. The report said 29 of the chemicals injected were known-or-suspected human carcinogens. They either were regulated under the Safe Drinking Water Act as risks to human health or listed as hazardous air pollutants under the Clean Air Act. Methanol was the most widely used chemical. The substance is a hazardous air pollutant and is on the candidate list for potential ...
NEW YORK -- The multibillion-dollar business of the three biggest Internet poker companies became a target of federal authorities before an indictment was unsealed Friday, charging 11 people with bank fraud and illegal gambling. Prosecutors in Manhattan said they've issued restraining orders against more than 75 bank accounts in 14 countries used by the poker companies, interrupting the illegal flow of billions of dollars. U.S. Attorney Preet Bharara said the defendants "concocted an elaborate criminal fraud scheme, alternately tricking some U.S. banks and effectively bribing others to ...
PROVO, Utah -- Prosecutors in Utah are fighting to have a convicted sex offender facing multiple child sex abuse charges committed indefinitely after doctors deemed him no danger to society but mentally incompetent for trial, meaning he could soon see the case against him dropped and be set free. They won at least a temporary reprieve late Wednesday when a judge ordered a civil commitment hearing for Friday for Lonnie Hyrum Johnson, 38. Johnson faces nearly two dozen charges of child sex abuse. He has been held at Utah State Hospital in Provo, about 45 miles north of Salt Lake City, since ...
Police in Utah are investigating the death of a disabled woman who they say was brutally abused and hung crucifixion-style inside a small closet. "It is a very unusual, sad, tragic case," Unified Police Lt. Justin Hoyal told AOL News. "It is sad to see that somebody could do this to another human being. You just don't see people being treated like this." Authorities were called to a residence in Kearns, a township in Salt Lake County, on Friday afternoon to investigate a possible overdose. When police and paramedics arrived on the scene, they discovered the body of 22-year-old Christina ...
No matter what, David Cicotello knew he had to survive. Cicotello, 57, was stranded on a ledge in No Man's Canyon, in the rugged wilderness some 180 miles southeast of Salt Lake City. His climbing partner - 70-year-old brother Louis - laid motionless on the ground 100 feet below, having fallen while rappelling. Cicotello made a "HELP" sign with some climbing equipment. And then he waited. AP / Wayne County Sheriff's Department A Search and Rescue Team helicopter descends to rescue 57-year-old David Cicotello at No Man's Canyon in southeastern Utah. Rescuers say Louis Cicotello, ...
Usually, a college student having sex wouldn't make headlines. But Brandon Davies isn't just any college student. He's a superstar on the Brigham Young University basketball team -- which is currently ranked No. 3 -- and is therefore bound by the Mormon school's strict honor code. And in addition to mandating that students "[a]bstain from alcoholic beverages, tobacco, tea, coffee and substance abuse" and "[u]se clean language," BYU students are expected to "live a chaste life." That means getting down before exchanging vows is strictly verboten. So Davies, a center, is off of BYU's team for ...
After years of snatching picnic baskets and duping park rangers without consequence, Yogi Bear appears to have finally been trapped by police in Utah. Officers from the Utah County Sheriff's Office apparently captured the famed Hanna-Barbera character on fishing without a license, immigration charges and other offenses. Yogi's cartoonish mug shot appeared on the Sheriff's Office website earlier this week, listing the suspect as a 60-year-old who stands 5 foot 8, weighs 490 pounds and has already been released on bond. ...
We usually think of steam powering things such as old-fashioned riverboats, locomotives and tea kettles. But a team of steam-punk speed freaks says hot air has a place on the road. Chuk Williams is striving to set a land speed record in a custom-built race car outfitted with a steam-powered engine. As early as August, Williams and the metalheads at Cyclone Engines could head to Utah's Bonneville Salt Flats in an attempt to make history, according to the New York Times' Wheels Blog. ...
Many of us women are obsessed with handbags, but now purchasing a particular purse could actually provide "Hope" -- and funding -- toward finding a cure for cancer. For the past year Miche Bag, a Utah-based handbag company, has been on a mission to raise money for cancer research programs at the state's Huntsman Cancer Institute through its products. For those not in the know, Miche Bag is a unique handbag that allows women to quickly change the look of their purse through interchangeable "shells" that attach and detach over the exterior of a Miche "base bag" via magnets. This way, women ...
